Although there’s still some large features I’m working on, we’ll aim for more of these smaller releases going forward, and I’ve adjusted version control to allow for bug fix releases without pulling in all major changes as well. Mainly fixes to plugins and first time use issues. Also adds OFX transitions and generators, and some other QoL improvements.

Fixed

With a lot of OFX plugins installed, Lumit would use a significant amount of storage on your system drive while open, and gave it back on close.

Sapphire never showed up in Effects & presets, since it takes longer to load than the scan allowed. Twixtor could go missing along with it, since killing a plugin that didn’t respond (but was) would hold up other effects being loaded.

Sometimes Sapphire effects showed “This plugin did not render this frame”.

OFX plugins that load a model on their first frame, such as a DLSS plugin, were switched off after 10 seconds. The first frame now gets 2 minutes.

A precomp used as a matte, such as a track matte or the Matte row of Depth of field, shrank into the middle of the frame when the Viewer was below 100%. Export was never affected.

HEVC exports wouldn’t play in QuickTime, Safari, Photos, or on iPhone.

The update check only said “Could not check for updates”. It now gives a slightly more detailed message to help respond.

The command palette’s search didn’t have the cursor when it opened, so typing did nothing until you clicked it.

Dark words on the default green made Create and the other main buttons look switched off.

The empty Viewer offered New project again after you’d already made one, and clicking it did nothing. It now offers Import footage next to Open.

Deleting the comp you were looking at put an error in the Viewer.

On a slow drive the import bar sat at 100% with Cancel doing nothing.

Dropping files into Lumit on Linux brought nothing in.

A layer dragged in the Viewer only snapped to the comp’s edges and middle with Snap to grid ticked.

Shape layers with a lot of keyed path shapes made every frame slow, so turning off the transparency grid, pressing play, or soloing a layer could take several seconds to show.

Switching comps kept showing the last comp until the new one had rendered. The Viewer now shows where you left that comp straight away, or a blank picture if you haven’t opened it yet.

Opening a precomp could leave the Timeline’s row lines out of step with the rows until you clicked something.

Making several changes in a row meant the Viewer finished drawing each one before it got to the last. A frame that’s already been replaced now stops part way, so the latest change shows sooner.

Lumit has had the default memory budget increased from 15% to 30% of the system memory.

One view could leave you looking at the source clip with no way back to the comp.

Leaving Cut didn’t always take the source side away.

Space and the frame keys always moved the comp, even with the source side in front.

A parented layer’s outline, handles, and motion path stayed put in the Viewer while the picture followed the parent.

A shape with a keyed path was outlined where the path started rather than where it is at the playhead.

A track matte ignored its layer’s parents, and slid and shrank with a region of interest set in the Viewer.

The Transform effect’s Scale came unlinked when its first keyframe was set in the Timeline, and Combine axes put it back unlinked.

What is new

Depth of field pro has a new Method row. Ray traced follows rays back through every surface of the lens to the depth, so it shows the lens’s own softness wide open and in the corners. Pointed at a precomp with 3D layers, it traces up to 12 of the layers themselves.

In and Out marks set on footage are kept on the item and saved with the project. Dropping the item into a comp or the Cut timeline brings only the marked stretch.

File ▸ Import folder brings in the footage in a folder and every folder inside it, and keeps them as folders in the project. Dropping a folder on Lumit does the same.

OFX transitions and generators show up in Effects & presets under their own headings. A transition reveals whatever is under the layer, like Lumit’s own wipes, and a generator replaces the layer’s picture.

Sign in with Apple added in the sign-in window.

Settings ▸ Account ▸ Devices pairs Lumit for iPhone with your device. Add a phone shows a code to scan, and this computer and each phone can be renamed or removed. This is still under testing with only select people added for testing.

Before you update

macOS 12 or newer is now needed.

Downloads

Windows, macOS, and Linux builds are on Lumit Downloads and
GitHub releases.

Lumit v0.8.0

Depth of field pro and lens window, node graph groups, new shape operations, Particulate bursts, Interpret footage, a proper expression editor, faster export, and more.

Another large update. Depth of field pro traces a real lens, node graphs have groups which can be saved, shape layers get Twist and Deform options, and Particulate can emit in bursts, including on the beat.

Exporting is about 7 times faster, projects should generally open faster, and after this release updates download patches to reduce download size and time.

As always please test these new features out and report anything that goes wrong.

What is new

Lenses and depth of field

Depth of field pro traces a real lens into its out-of-focus shapes. This is in addition to the existing Depth of field effect.

Its Depth row reads a depth pass, or distance in metres from a precomp with 3D layers.

One lens window for Depth of field pro and Lens flare picks, imports, and edits lenses.

An edited lens is stored within the project, and can be saved for use in any project.

Lens dirt can be fully customised, with multiple dirt options, out of focus options, and glass curvature. Thanks to @tujlugpam for the original version of this a long time ago.

Both depth of field effects have a Zebra tickbox that stripes whatever is in focus.

In node graphs distance can now be passed via wires between effects, and Depth of field pro can output its focus, f-stop, and glass curvature for other effects, such as lens dirt/flare to work in tandem.

Node graphs

Nodes can be framed in named, coloured groups, and saved to the preset library. Groups can be nested, and notes can be added to the canvas to help organise.

A box keeps the picture past the frame, up to one frame past each edge. File ▸ Project settings… ▸ Node graph overscan has two frames and Maximum.

The Viewer’s guides menu has Picture bounds, a dotted outline of how far the picture reaches past the frame.

A Switch only decodes and renders the input it picks.

Wires have a dropdown with Curved, Angled, and Hanging, and a wire going backwards no longer snaps sideways halfway down.

Shape layers

Twist spins a shape about an axis.

Deform moves the outline with a smooth noise field.

Smooth rounds off the whole path without bulging past its points.

Stroke taper narrows a stroke towards its ends like a brush stroke.

All four are on a new Add menu on a shape’s right-click in the Timeline.

Effects

Particulate has bursts, once at the start, every few frames, or each time Trigger rises past 0.5.

Particulate can also kill or wrap particles at the frame’s edge, drive size, opacity, and colour by speed or a random number, be born where a Density layer is bright, and blend particles with any blend mode.

The marks on a selected effect’s points, such as a Centre or a Light position, can be dragged in the Viewer.

Emit from image, Displacement map, Pick points, and Vary points have Map placement, so a map layer lines up where it sits in the comp.

Seed now sits at the bottom of every effect that has one.

Drivers and expressions

Measure passes size, centre, and edges of a layer’s content, which allows you to automatically adjust backgrounds if text changes for instance. Expressions get sourceRectAtTime for the same info.

Beat trigger turns beat markers, beats found in the audio, or a band crossing a threshold into a pulse, count, and an envelope.

Clicking an expression opens a proper editor over the row. It grows with what is written, and shows the value at the playhead.

A broken expression says why under the text, and the row draws its number in red.

The Expressions panel follows the selected property.

Tab indents in the shader and expression editors.

Footage and importing

Interpret footage… on a footage row’s menu sets alpha, frame rate, start timecode, fields, pulldown, pixel aspect ratio, loop, linear light, Preserve RGB, and colour space.

EXRs with a lone channel, such as a depth pass, open in greyscale at their real values, and multi-pass renders from Blender, Nuke, and Houdini open on their beauty pass. Interpret footage has a Render pass list to pick another.

Opening an After Effects project brings across each item’s interpretation and its OCIO colour management.

The 20 most used third-party After Effects effects now import, to the vendor’s OFX build when it’s installed or the closest Lumit effect otherwise.

A file with several audio streams arrives with them all mixed on one layer, which can be split.

Analyse and Propagate work on precomp layers.

Depth, Remove background, and the Roto brush have a Frames row to analyse every frame, the layer’s in to out, or the work area. Depth and Remove background can save each frame to a folder as a PNG.

The flow Input rate goes up to 10,000 fps.

Settings has a New project template, a project every new one starts as a copy of.

Cut and the Timeline

A clip on a Sequence layer can have its own effects and blend mode.

The effect controls have a keyframe strip. It can be turned off in Settings ▸ Timeline.

Cut has auto ripple, auto crossfade, and quantise, tracks can be dragged taller or shorter, and a footage layer’s sound shows under it.

There’s a Vegas shortcut preset added in Settings.

Speed points take an exact percentage, and markers draw lines down the timelines.

One effect can be saved as a preset, and presets can be dragged onto layers.

Pasting keys with layers selected pastes the keys on the same property of each layer, first key at the playhead, adding the effect if applicable.

The Graph editor has a switch to show the selected curves, every curve on the selected layers, or every curve in the comp. Selecting a key also shows the handles facing it either side.

Copy ease, Paste ease, and Join handles are in the keyframe menus.

Fit selection in the Graph editor, and F fits the keyframes in layer view.

The Hand tool pans the Timeline, the Graph editor, and both node graphs.

Duplicate composition, which asks whether nested comps are shared or copied.

Precomposing a layer whose parent or matte stays outside offers to duplicate them.

Export asks before writing over a file, with Overwrite, Keep both, and Cancel.

The mixer faders taper.

Updates and the window

An update button sits on the bottom bar. It shows download/update percentage, and hovering it lists what each missed release adds.

Updates after this one download patches to update which reduces update time and size.

Windows updates install without a window, and Lumit relaunches on its own.

On Windows the title bar has been merged with the menu bar.

On Linux Lumit’s own title bar is off by default, with a switch in Settings ▸ Appearance.

Toolbars that can’t fit all items now fold their buttons into a ⋯ menu.

Items that can be clicked brighten/enlarge under the pointer, and lists glide with the mouse wheel.

Extensions can keep a short line on the bottom strip.

The first launch screen has a tick on the After Effects and Vegas cards to load their shortcuts, off by default.

Thumbnails on footage rows, layer names on lane bars, marker lines, the minimap, and node graph wires are now set in a Panels section of Settings ▸ Appearance.

The Desk rooms row has gone from Appearance, as the colour scheme menu picks the same.

Performance

Exporting is faster.

When opening a project, the time to load is reduced in many cases.

Playback on cached frames no longer goes out late or drops the sound.

A precomp that isn’t changing is no longer rendered again on every frame while playing.

A precomp under motion blur is no longer rendered twice.

Time spent building the interface while previewing reduced.

Lens flare at Ultra is almost twice as fast.

Fixed

Lumit wouldn’t start on a clean Windows install, as the Visual C++ runtime was missing.

An update on macOS left the app saying it was damaged.

Proxies were never used, and Make proxy failed on some clips.

Footage with uneven frame times drifted against its own sound.

The sound stopped for about a second where a Lens flare started in a loop, and clicked when it stopped, started, or looped.

Lens flare ghosts leaned pink, and a blue coating made yellow ghosts.

Matte mode flares merged lamps far apart into one light that jumped between frames.

Newer Red Giant Universe didn’t show up. Plugins Lumit turns away now have the reason written to plugin-scan.txt beside plugins.json.

A file made from a project kept online, such as a Save as or a copy, opened as the shared project.

An expression on an effect value, JavaScript or Rhai, often didn’t change the Viewer until another value on the effect moved.

An expression on a point, an angle, or a whole number stopped the effect controls drawing.

Motion blur on an adjustment layer smeared the last frame of a shot with the shot after the cut.

The Node panel showed an effect’s internal name, such as lens_flare, instead of its name.

The cache bar flicked short during playback.

A keyed trim, repeater, or path on a shape layer showed one frame while playing, and an expression on a shape value didn’t move.

An effect’s matte or depth layer was stretched over the effect’s own layer, so it didn’t line up when either layer was moved, scaled, or not full frame.

Save group was greyed out unless a driver was picked.

Changing a comp’s size pushed every layer into the top-left corner.

Layer ▸ Split layer only worked on Sequence layers.

Locked layers could still be picked and dragged in the Viewer.

The colour picker’s ring jumped about near black.

Tab in the shader editor moved focus out of the code, and drag-selecting in scrolled text jumped.

On macOS the two halves of the Timeline bounced apart on a trackpad scroll.

The addon model runtime wouldn’t load on macOS.

A pinned taskbar or Start menu shortcut kept showing the old icon after an update.

The main window could be made small enough to break the layout, it now stops at 840 x 560.

Before you update

A file with several audio streams now arrives with all of them mixed on one layer, it used to play only the first. Layers already in a project are left alone.

Several audio streams arrive as in Settings puts it back. If you had set it to The first stream, set it again.

The Colour space menu on a footage row has gone. A footage item’s colour space is now set in Interpret footage…, on its Colour tab.

Lens flares look a little cooler than before, as white light was coming out as pink.

A node graph box now keeps the picture past the frame, so a graph that scales or warps its picture may show what used to be cut off.

Footage with uneven frame times now stays in sync with its sound, so its picture may land a frame differently from before.

An effect’s matte or depth layer is now read where it sits in the comp. If either layer is moved, scaled, or not full frame the picture may change, such as moved footage reading a depth pass that was left where it was.

Known gaps

The Frames row does nothing on a node graph box yet, and the trackers don’t have it.

Measure reads footage as the comp’s frame, and a layer turned in 3D as if it lay flat.

Corner pin and other warps still stay inside the picture they’re handed in a node graph.

Cryptomatte passes are left out of the Render pass list, as they’ll get their own node.

A point driven by an expression isn’t marked in the Viewer, so it can’t be dragged.

On Windows, resting on the maximise button doesn’t open the snap layouts.

Thanks very much to everyone who sent in reports and requests for this release, especially @Airyzz for the node graph ones and Requa for the editors and the colour picker. A lot of this release came straight from your notes.

Lumit v0.7.0

Lumit Pro, Cut workspace, JavaScript expressions and improved presets, points effects, extensions, Illustrator import, and a long list of fixes.

This is the biggest release so far. Lumit Pro is here, an optional subscription that helps support Lumit and pays for the servers used to enable the functionality behind sharing, sync, previews, and backup. Lumit itself is still free and open source, and no editing tool will ever be put behind a paywall.

Along with this there is a Cut workspace for arranging large amounts of footage, JavaScript expressions and improved presets, an expanded family of points effects, extensions, layered Illustrator import, and a long list of fixes.

Lumit also has nightly builds now. Turn them on in Settings and Lumit updates to each night’s build, so you get new work before it reaches a release. They haven’t had a release’s testing, so expect the odd problem.

As always please test these new features out and report anything that goes wrong.

What is new

Lumit Pro

Lumit Pro is $6 a month or $60 a year, and is bought inside Lumit, from your profile in the bottom left. Everything Lumit could do before is still free, and all offline functionality added in the future will remain that way.

Shared projects through Lumit’s relay. Guests join with the link and no setup. Only the host needs Pro.

Keep online holds a shared project on Lumit’s server, so nobody’s computer has to stay on. It is encrypted, and the server never reads it.

A project kept online also has a second invite that can only look, provide notes on the work, and a hold on a control while someone is changing it. People are shown by name in the main window, and pressing one follows them to see their current work.

Composition ▸ Share a preview… sends an export of a comp as a link. Anyone with the link can comment on a frame without an account, and the comments come back into Lumit. A comment added to the Timeline becomes a marker on its layer.

A new version of a preview goes to the same link with a line saying what changed, and reviewers can approve a version.

Backup keeps a copy of a project each time it’s saved, with its picture and what changed. File ▸ Project history… opens a save as a copy or puts it back, and one comp can be brought back from an earlier save.

Settings sync carries shortcuts, themes, workspaces, and presets to every device you sign in on.

An account holds up to 50 GB.

Profiles and accounts

Profiles sit on the bottom strip, each with its own unique settings. They’re free and don’t need an account.

Sign in with an email and password, Google, or Discord. Settings ▸ Account has all of it in one place.

The Cut workspace

Cut is brand new, and very much work in progress. There’s a lot of work required on it, but we’re sharing the beginnings of it now.

Cut is a seventh workspace, aimed at being a NLE within Lumit. The goal being you can do your entire workflow without having to leave the program.

The Cut timeline shows each layer as a track of clips, with Select, Razor, Ripple, Roll, Slip, and Slide tools on V, C, B, N, Y, and U. Holding a key uses that tool for one drag/click.

The source view plays a footage item, marks In and Out, and Inserts or Overwrites the marked part at the playhead.

A picture clip and its sound clip can be linked, so they move, trim, and cut together.

Ripple delete, close gap, lift, extract, match frame, trims and rolls to the playhead, and nudges. Each is one undo step.

Two picture clips that overlap dissolve, and a clip’s fades work on picture as well as sound.

A clip can play a comp, and a clip can be turned into a comp.

The first time startup screen also adds Premiere Pro/Resolve as an option, which makes footage arrive on Sequence layers and opens Lumit in Cut.

Make proxy on several footage items queues them one after another, and a folder’s menu has Make proxies.

The project panel has a Duration column, and a setting for thumbnails on footage rows.

Shared projects

An invite is now one lumitlab.com/join link that holds every address the host can be reached at. It’s hidden in the Shared project window until you ask to see it.

The host can set a password that guests type as well as having the link.

Lumit asks the router to open the port, so people outside your network can join without a VPN. The port is closed again when sharing stops.

lumit-relay is a small server anyone can run for when neither router lets the other in.

Footage is sent to people who haven’t got it, as a compressed stand-in with sound. An export can fetch the frames it reads at full quality, fetch the originals, or be done on the computer that has them.

What someone else has selected is marked in their colour, in the Timeline, the effect controls, the project panel, and the node graph.

Removing a guest replaces the invite, so they can’t rejoin with the old one.

Upload and download limits for footage are in the Shared project window and in Settings.

Everyone in a shared project needs to be on the same version to access. If you run your own relay, it needs updating too.

Expressions and After Effects

Expressions can be written in JavaScript as well as Rhai, with additional functions, such as wiggle, loopOut, linear, ease, and effect(“x”)(“y”). Each expression keeps its own language, and both are syntax highlighted.

An .ffx preset can be applied to a layer. A pseudo effect arrives as the new Custom controls effect.

Expressions in an After Effects project come across as JavaScript, and a property with keyframes and an expression keeps its keyframes.

A text layer imported from After Effects keeps its font, spacing, scale, caps, outline, alignment, and box width, and lands where it was drawn.

Alt+K adds or removes a keyframe at the playhead. Alt+Shift+P, S, R, T, and A do it for Position, Scale, Rotation, Opacity, and Anchor point.

Shift+= and Shift+- step the blend mode, and a lot more After Effects shortcuts are on their default keys.

The Expressions panel has Import and Export, so saved expressions can be shared as a file.

Effects

A family of points effects. Vary, Pick, Transform, Merge, Relax, and Flow points change a stream of points and hand it on.

Points along path, Text to points, Track points, and Label points make or label points from a mask, a Text layer, or footage. Points field draws a stream as a picture, and Bake points lets a driver read one.

Scatter and Emit from image now feed the effects below them. Adding a points effect under one that makes points wires them together.

Points can carry named values, which can be a number, an offset, or a colour.

Gaussian blur, Directional blur, and Glow have Repeat edge pixels. With it off the layer grows to hold the effect, so a blur on a shape or text layer isn’t cut off at the edge of the art.

Drop shadow can fall outside the layer, and so can the Drop shadow, Outer glow, and Stroke layer styles.

Shape gradients have an opacity at each end, and a Gradient stops row for adding colours between them. Every stop can be keyframed.

A selected effect’s points are marked in the Viewer, and a point can be picked outside the frame.

Extensions

An extension is a panel someone else has made. It’s a folder with a web page in it, shown in its own panel and listed under Window ▸ Extensions.

One is installed from a folder in Settings, after a window listing what it asks to be allowed.

Importing and projects

An Illustrator file with two or more layers imports as a comp, with a layer for each Illustrator layer.

PSD import now reads nested groups, 16 bit, solid colour fills, Fill, vector masks, and six layer styles. Twelve kinds of adjustment layer come in as an Adjustment layer with the nearest effect, switched off.

A file with several audio streams, such as a recording with the game and the mic apart, can have its streams picked, split onto a layer each, and merged back. Layer ▸ Audio has Split and Merge.

Imports, opening a project, and After Effects import run in the background, with a card showing the percentage and a Cancel button.

A packed project also carries proxies, the OCIO config, and the files effects read, such as a LUT.

A project someone sends you opens with Pack automatically off, even if they had it on.

Opening a project after a crash asks whether to restore the edits it left behind.

Opening a project that’s already open brings that window forward.

Right-clicking a footage item has Show in folder.

Text

Dragging with the Type tool draws a box, and the text wraps to its width. The Paragraph panel has the box width and Justify.

New text starts with kerning on.

The Timeline

Markers can have a colour and a duration. A marker with a duration is a region, shaded down through the lanes.

Holding Shift while scrubbing snaps the playhead to markers, layer ends, keyframes, and the work area.

J, K, and L shuttle. Each further press of J or L doubles the speed, up to 8 times.

Parenting a layer keeps it where it was, as does unparenting and swapping parents.

The parent and matte pickers show the layer’s number before its name.

Dragging a handle in the graph editor moves the same handle on every selected keyframe.

Dragging inside a key block’s box moves every keyframe together.

Each comp remembers how far down it’s scrolled if you switch comps and then go back.

Right-clicking under the layer rows opens a menu, and the layer menu has Precompose.

The Layer menu has Lock, Unlock all layers, and Arrange.

Node graphs

A wire going backwards is two curves that meet in the middle, so it no longer swings out past its sockets.

A new Transform starts with Scale x and y linked, and the Node panel and the boxes have the link too.

Remove background, Depth, and the Roto brush work inside a node graph.

Interface

Menus, dropdowns, and dialogues show their surface first with the rows following a beat behind, in Studio and Lantern.

A panel on its own can be dragged and closed by its title, so the Viewer can be moved.

Lumit can show in your Discord status. Settings ▸ General ▸ Discord status picks between off, Lumit only, and the project and composition names.

Settings has a Hardware video decoding tick, on by default.

The system’s reduce motion setting turns Lumit’s animations off.

macOS

Clicking an invite link or double-clicking a .lum opens it in Lumit.

Smaller things

Italian has its first 52 strings (thanks to @andrea68git).

The website has new sections, a Projects page with six projects to download, a media page, both accessed via the footer, and a Lumit Pro page.

The manual has been restyled to match the website, and lists every page on its home page.

If you like noodle wires, catenary curves have been added for node connections, courtesy of @Airyzz.

Fixed

A crash after a project’s first save lost everything since that save.

A failed export deleted the file it was replacing.

Changing a layer’s volume or audio switch during playback wasn’t heard until playback was restarted.

The picture was up to 16 frames behind an edit made during playback.

5.1 and 7.1 footage played up to 9.9 dB too loud and clipped.

The wave and spectrogram in the Audio timeline stayed at the old zoom until you scrolled, and zooming out could leave part of a clip blank.

A project opened in the first few seconds after launch showed its OFX plugins with a raw name and no controls.

RSMB and Echo saw no motion from Sequence layers and node graph comps inside a precomp, and did nothing on a Sequence layer.

On the frame before a cut, Echo and motion blur plugins read the outgoing shot held.

Controls on a node graph box stopped working once the graph was zoomed out or panned.

Pressing a marker moved the playhead to it, and a dragged marker snapped to where the playhead used to be.

Dragging keyframes selected on the same frame across several rows did nothing.

Clicking an effect’s name in the Timeline collapsed its layer.

The Timeline’s selection box was drawn behind the bars and row lines.

Shutting a heading inside a U reveal brought every other row back.

The slider on some effect rows in the Timeline sat behind the buttons beside it.

Editing a keyed shape, mask, paint, or puppet value after moving the playhead wrote over the last keyframe.

A layer moved by an expression kept its Viewer outline where it started.

Picking a point on the Viewer took two undos to put back.

Up, Down, Home, and End moved the Type tool’s caret twice, and double-clicking an emoji selected half of it.

An expression with a long chain of operators could crash Lumit, and a loop could hang it for minutes.

Easing x on a chained Scale in a Transform effect left y behind.

Quitting during the tour asked to save the tour’s own comp.

The blend and matte pickers were cut down to empty boxes in a narrow effect controls panel.

Closing a project cleared the puppet meshes of every other open project.

Letting go of Shift early on a Viewer move dropped the layer off its axis.

A 1px line sitting on a pixel boundary drew nothing.

EXR wasn’t picked from an export’s file name, and a % in a sequence name broke it.

The Windows installer could package an old DLL left beside the exe.

On macOS the menu bar was rebuilt far more often than it needed to be, and the Illustrator helper had no memory limit.

The README’s macOS and Linux build steps installed an FFmpeg version Lumit can’t build with.

Before you update

Drop shadow, and the Drop shadow, Outer glow, and Stroke layer styles, are no longer cut off at the layer’s edge. A shape, text, or small solid that has one may look different.

A points effect that is last on a shape or text layer now draws past the edge of the art too.

Clone to points sorts its stamps by depth. Turn Depth sort off on the effect to get the old order back.

A 1px line from a points effect that sat on a pixel boundary drew nothing, and now draws.

A layer used as a matte now runs its Node graph effects, so the matte may change.

Remove background, Depth, and the Roto brush did nothing inside a node graph. A graph that has one now shows its result.

RSMB, Echo, and other effects that read the frames either side now see motion from Sequence layers and node graph comps, and read the right shot on the frame before a cut.

A clip’s fades now fade its picture as well as its sound. A video clip that was given a fade in the Audio timeline will fade in the comp too.

A clip that plays a comp now draws and sounds, it used to do neither.

5.1 and 7.1 footage is quieter, as it was being folded down to stereo up to 9.9 dB too loud.

Rhai expressions can no longer load files or use eval, and a very long loop may now reach the step limit and stop.

Known gaps

Asking the router to open the port hasn’t been tried against many routers. The Shared project window says when a router refuses.

On Linux an extension’s page is swapped for a still picture while a menu, tooltip, or dialogue is open.

PSD adjustment layers come in switched off, since the same numbers give a different picture in linear light.

On macOS, double-clicking a .lumfx or .lumtheme still does nothing.

Lumit can still freeze when importing media on some AMD integrated graphics (#181). Turning Hardware video decoding off in Settings is something to try.

Thanks very much to everyone who sent in reports, requests, and translations for this release, and to everyone who picks up Lumit Pro. It all goes back into Lumit.

Lumit v0.6.0

Shared projects, improved setup, Text and Paragraph panels, PSD import, packed project files, and a lot of interface fixes.

Projects can now be shared, and allow several people to edit the same project at the same time. New users get a setup screen and a guided tour of the interface, and text layers have proper Text and Paragraph panels. Along with this, PSD files import as layered comps, a project can be packed into one file, and there is a long list of interface fixes and quality of life changes.

Shared projects are brand new and have only been tested on a small scale, so please test and report any issues so that we can clean them all up before the next release.

What is new

Shared projects

File ▸ Shared project… lets several people edit one project at once. One person hosts and gets an invite to send, and the others can join.

Edits appear for everyone as they’re made, and two people can work on the same layer at once. Undo only takes back your own edits.

Each person has a colour. It marks the comps they have open, the layers they’ve selected, their playhead in the Timeline, and their pointer in the Viewer.

Footage isn’t sent. A guest picks a footage folder when joining, and each item is matched to a file in it by name and then by content.

If the host goes away the guests can keep working, and their edits merge back in when the host returns. Anything both sides changed waits in a Conflicts window with Keep mine or Keep theirs.

Guests connect straight to the host’s computer over a local network or a VPN, so nothing goes through a server. Up to 16 people can join.

Everyone in a shared project needs to be on the same version of Lumit to be able to share work.

Getting started

The setup screen on first launch now also asks for style, colour scheme, toolbar position, and motion. Each choice applies as you pick.

Improved the look of the setup screen with additional images to help visual options. Vegas has a tick to only change the default Retime graph, which leaves video arriving as a normal layer, instead of in a Sequence layer.

A guided tour runs after the setup screen, and walks through the project panel, Viewer, tools, Timeline, effect controls, workspaces, and the node graph. Help ▸ Lumit tour runs it again.

Picking After Effects on first run loads the After Effects keymap.

Text

Text and Paragraph panels. Text layers can use any installed font, and have leading, kerning, tracking, scale, baseline shift, caps, a stroke, alignment, indents, and spacing.

Text can run across more than one line, with Shift+Enter in the Type tool.

Click to place the caret, drag to select, double-click for a word, and triple-click for the line.

Importing and projects

A PSD imports as a comp the size of the document, with a layer for each Photoshop layer. Name, opacity, visibility, blend mode, and top-level groups are kept, and layer masks and clipping masks are applied.

File ▸ Packed project file saves a project with all of its footage inside the .lum, so the one file can be handed to someone else. It has Pack, Unpack, and Pack automatically.

Settings ▸ Shortcuts can read the shortcut file After Effects saves, so custom binds carry over. The same page has a keyboard picture showing which keys are taken on each of the Ctrl, Alt, and Shift layers.

Dropping files anywhere on the window imports them.

Closing a project with unsaved changes asks if you’d like to save first.

The Timeline

Hold Ctrl and drag the ruler to hear the comp’s sound under the playhead. Works in layer view, graph view, and the Audio timeline.

Tab opens a flowchart at the pointer, with the open comp in the middle, the comps it’s used in on the left, and the comps it contains on the right. Also under the Composition menu.

Right-click menus on a layer bar, an empty lane, and the ruler.

Moving or trimming a bar shows its in, out, and duration.

A Break handles toggle at the bottom of the graph editor. The key for it can also be changed from Alt to Ctrl under Settings ▸ Shortcuts.

Effects can be dragged from Effects & presets straight onto a layer.

Still layers are the full length of the comp when added, and their length can be adjusted.

Double-click a layer name to rename it, drag down a switch column to set several layers at once, and Alt-click solo to solo just that layer.

Switches now opens on visibility, solo, and lock, and Modes on fx, 3D, and motion blur.

Matte, blend, and parent pickers at their default show as muted text until you hover the row, and switches that are off are dimmer.

New icons for fx, motion blur, and the four interpolation buttons, and the render times column can be toggled from the bottom strip.

The Viewer

Arrow keys nudge the selected layers by a pixel, or 10 with Shift, and Shift keeps a move to one axis.

Right-click opens a menu with Select, Align, Fit, and the overlays.

Double-click a text layer to edit it, or a precomp to open it.

A line shows what a move snapped to.

Moving several layers is now one undo step.

Node graphs

A Custom shader’s box carries a small picture of its inner graph, and clicking it opens the graph. This works inside a node graph too, and the effect controls have an Open graph button.

Depth of field, Motion blur, and Matte key have an output socket per view, so Rendered and Focus map can be wired separately.

The Expression driver has Add input and Remove input buttons. Each input is a number socket the expression reads by name, for instance
input_1 * input_2
.

Effects and plugins

An Expressions panel under Window ▸ Expressions, where you can save your own expressions and apply them in any project.

OFX plugins can now set, hide, and grey their own controls.

Larger OFX suites such as Sapphire now load.

Mix and Matte are folded under a Compositing twirl in the effect controls.

Effects are in alphabetical order in the menus and the panel. The star only shows on hover or when starred, and the one by the search box filters to favourites.

The colour picker keeps the last 8 colours.

Interface

Subtle animations on hovers, menus, popups, dialogues, tooltips, and tabs, timed a bit differently per style. Settings ▸ Appearance ▸ Motion picks between Full, Minimal, and None.

Paper Mono is the new font for timecode and values. Desk keeps IBM Plex.

A panel group can be drawn as a stack. Right-click a tab and tick Stacked group.

Settings ▸ Appearance ▸ Label case picks between the style’s choice, all caps, first letter, and lower case.

The status line says what the current tool’s modifier keys do, and tooltips show the shortcut.

The command palette lists every menu command, the layers in the current comp, and every setting. Settings search covers every page too.

Edit ▸ Undo and Redo name the step, such as “Undo Rename layer”.

The small explanation lines under rows in Settings are gone.

Project panel and export

Click a column heading in the project panel to sort by it.

Replace footage is on every footage item, not just missing ones.

Exports show roughly how long is left, and clicking a finished export opens its folder.

Greyed out controls in the export dialogue say why in a tooltip.

Smaller things

Simplified Chinese has 123 more strings (thanks to @27AAFF), and Brazilian Portuguese has its first 295 (thanks to @CarlosDS6).

The Windows install folder is tidier, with the DLLs moved into a lib folder.

Clicking a notice lists the last 20.

The website has a new home page, and the changelog has an RSS feed.

Fixed

On Linux laptops with an Intel and an NVIDIA graphics card, Lumit crashed as soon as something was put in the Timeline. This hasn’t been tried on one of these laptops yet, so please report it if it still happens.

RSMB on a precomp or adjustment layer did nothing. The same fixes Echo on a precomp, and any other OFX plugin that reads the frames either side.

Exports failed with “AVERROR(-22): Invalid argument” when the file name was typed without an extension.

A failed export’s error was cut off after a few words. It now says which step failed, and shows in full on hover.

The , and . keys did nothing, they now move the playhead to the previous and next keyframe. K stops playback.

Ctrl+D didn’t duplicate the whole selection the way the menu does.

Dragging the navigator window zoomed the Timeline out a little on every move.

Markers drifted from the pointer when dragged.

The Type tool’s box and caret ran past the words.

Every tooltip was drawn too far down and right of its control.

Every project left a journal folder in the cache that was never removed.

OFX plugins wrote ofxTestLog.txt into the install folder.

Menu rows and tools for things that aren’t built yet were still shown.

The more button drew as an empty box.

Studio and Desk drew row lines in an empty comp.

In Lantern the Viewer’s pills were clipped at the corners, the playhead clipped the lane area’s corner at the first frame, and the status line had a wide grey shadow under it.

The workspace name wasn’t centred in Lantern and Desk.

Before you update

Some projects that use specific OFX plugins may revert on updating, this is due to fixing how OFX plugins can update multiple properties based on one control being changed.

Known gaps

Shared projects don’t send proxies, files an effect reads such as a LUT, or the results of tracking, roto, and depth analysis.

A PSD’s layer styles, adjustment and fill layers, and nested groups aren’t imported yet, and 16 bit is read down to 8.

Text has no box text or justification yet, and new text is unkerned until Kerning is set to Metrics.

Proxies and the OCIO config aren’t packed into a packed project file.

Saved expressions can’t be shared as files yet.

RSMB on a precomp still sees no motion from Sequence layers and node graph comps inside it.

Lumit can still freeze when importing media on some AMD integrated graphics (#181), this is being looked into.

Thanks very much to everyone who sent in reports, requests, and translations for this release. I hope you enjoy using Lumit!

Lumit v0.5.0

Interface styles and colour themes, local addons, motion paths, and a number of fixes.

Lumit now has three interface styles and twelve new colour themes. Addons are in, with the first local models for depth,
background removal, frame synthesis, and the Roto brush. The node graph has several improvements, the Viewer draws motion paths, and fixes from the backlog.

What is new

Styles and themes

Two new interface styles, Desk and Lantern, beside the old one, which is now called Studio. Switch between them under Settings ▸ Appearance ▸ Shape.

Twelve new colour themes, each with a light and a dark variant.

The toolbar can sit on the left, and the Viewer has a Deck arrangement.

Range sliders on effect rows can be turned off.

The Round style is gone, and a workspace saved with it opens as Lantern.

Addons

Addons are still experimental and may be updated going forward. So please give feedback. Currently they provide some ML models to assist in certain areas of the program. We will never add genAI to addons. Going forward we also want to open this up to be able to install addons from other users.

Settings has an Addons page. It lists what is installed, and Check for addons shows what else is available.

The first packs are Depth generation, Remove background, RIFE frame
synthesis as an Engine option under Flow, and SAM 2 seeding for the Roto brush.

Node graphs

The Timeline shows the node graph under the ruler when a node graph comp is open, and
the effect controls show the picked box’s properties (requested by @Airyzz in #153).

Effects can be dragged in from Effects & presets, and right click, Tab, or Shift+A
open node search at the pointer. Each can be turned off under Settings ▸ Timeline.

Boxes copy and paste, and undo removes a paste in one step.

Split channels and Combine channels boxes. Combine takes luminance from each
input by default, or a channel picked per input.

An Expression driver box, with Value, Colour, Point x, and Point y outputs.

The Viewer

A selected layer’s motion path is drawn as a wireframe.

A layer with keyed position now has a box in the Viewer, so it can be picked on the picture.

Audio

Audio effects on a Precomp layer now work and treat precomp audio as a single audio source.

Detect beats shows how far it has progressed.

Smaller things

The scroll wheel modifiers can be changed under Settings ▸ Shortcuts ▸ Scroll wheel,
for zooming the Timeline, scrolling it sideways, zooming graph values, and the dropper
sample size (requested by @politohh).

An image sequence’s frame rate can be set from its menu in the project panel.

Levels has channel buttons, so its handles work on one channel at a time.

The command palette remembers what you last ran after Lumit closes, and every row shows its shortcut.

Timeline twirls and effect control folds are saved with the project.

Footage Lumit can’t decode shows an unreadable badge rather than importing silently.

An After Effects project whose layers can’t be read now imports its footage anyway and explains the issue. Casts Shadows and keyframed dropdowns in colour effects are reported too.

Scanlines and the lens flare scale with the comp size, so a precomp at a different size looks the same.

OFX bundles that keep their own DLLs beside the plugin now load (reported by @politohh).

Pixel sort has a Random offset scale control, and a span can be up to 4096 pixels long rather than 1024, so it can cover the whole width of a larger picture (with fixes from @Airyzz in #175).

Arabic and Brazilian Portuguese are on the translation page and in the language list.

Performance

The effect controls redraw far less when you pick or delete an effect.

Clicking a row in the project panel rebuilds far fewer widgets.

Corner detection is faster.

Layers hidden under a rotated or scaled layer that covers the frame are no longer drawn for increased render speeds.

Fixed

On laptops with two graphics cards the Viewer was blank while the sound played (reported by @liquidsvfx).

Dragging a keyed mask’s points in the Viewer snapped back on release, and Delete key on a Path key did nothing (reported by @edup).

Pressing Delete in the effect controls, or on an effect row in the Timeline, deleted the layer.

Effects and presets were added to every selected layer instead of one.

Relinked footage on a different drive to the project went missing again on reopen.

After a relink the Viewer kept showing colour bars and the missing files count, and the clip had no speaker switch.

A relinked image sequence kept its old frame range.

Double clicking the relink badge opened New composition.

The glow had a hard square edge at high intensity.

Switching from graph view back to layer view scrolled the lane area to the top.

Plugin on/off parameters never reached the plugin.

Mirror, Lens distort, Drop shadow, Transform, Shake motion blur, Directional blur, and Radial blur could leave a stray pixel at the edge of the frame.

Clicking a switch on a locked layer threw an error.

A crash before a project was opened wasn’t written to the crash log.

The Settings scrollbar thumb jumped.

Lumit’s icon was missing on Linux (with fixes from @Airyzz in #176).

Boxes in the node graph were drawn outside of its panel (with fixes from @Airyzz in #177).

Edit shader and Load from file did nothing on a Custom shader box in a node graph, and the node panel’s buttons were greyed out.

Rows declared by a Custom shader, such as Gain or Tint, had no socket in the node graph, so nothing could be wired into them.

Before you update

The glow is drawn differently, so projects with a glow will look a little different. This is most noticeable with Falloff values above 0.

Beat tap has moved from 8 to the / key, since the number keys now create numbered markers.

Known gaps

Motion path tangent handles are drawn but can’t be dragged yet, and the path redraws on release.

Arabic reads left to right for now.

I will be gone for the next two weeks, once I return all work on Lumit will no longer use AI assistance. Thanks very much for all the reports and requests that went into this release. I hope this fixes some of the issues people had and you can enjoy using Lumit!

Lumit v0.4.0

Node graphs compositions, audio timeline, a rebuilt camera, and multiple viewers.

The second half of the node graph is built, and an entire composition can be built within
the node graph, with both branching and merging. The audio workspace has a all new audio
timeline, containing only audio and allowing for more complex audio work. The camera has
been overhauled to fix issue with it’s transform properties, and provide additional
controls. And finally the viewer has been rebuilt to allow for multiple items open. There
are also a couple of new effects, and several fixes.

Still beta, so please test and report anything that isn’t right so that we can clean it
all up before the next release. Future releases will likely focus more on cleaning up and
QoL items to aim for the main release, so if there’s something missing or helpful we can
add please tell us!

What is new

Node graphs

A node graph is now a form of composition. Composition ▸ New node graph (or the project
panel’s menu) makes one, with Read boxes bringing footage and comps in, an Output box
at the end, and wires that branch and merge in-between. This is built from the proposal
in #106 (requested by @Airyzz).

Merge and Switch boxes. Merge lays one picture over another with a blend mode
and opacity, and Switch shows whichever of its inputs the Index says, so a driver or a
keyframe can flick between pictures.

Any effect or driver is a box, so its rows keyframe, take expressions and take wires
exactly as they do on a layer. Points wires work inside a graph too.

Apply a node graph to a layer as an effect. The layer’s picture goes in as the graph’s
first Input, the graph’s other Inputs become the effect’s rows, and the Output is what
comes back out.

Time inside a graph. Echo, Motion blur, Datamosh, Posterize time and the accumulation
motion blur all read their input box at the times they need, and a new Time offset
box shows its input shifted in time.

Expressions can read a graph’s Input by name with
input("Name")
.

Sound comes through a graph’s Read boxes.

Precomp layers can be retimed. Retime on a precomp maps the nested comp’s time the
way it does on footage.

The Audio timeline

The Audio workspace has its own timeline, built for mixing. Every row is a track with
mute, solo, an fx switch, a twirl onto Volume and its own effects rack, and a Wave or
Spectral display option on the right.

Tracks hold clips. Trim them, slide them, drag one onto another track, overlap two for a
crossfade, drag the top corners for fades, and right click for the five fade shapes or a
custom curve. Each clip has its own gain line and its own effects.

In the layer Timeline, a comp that has been edited in the Audio timeline shows a
Sound mix row at the bottom with the audio layers folded behind it. Double click it to
open the Audio workspace, or right click to convert the mix to a precomp.

Fifteen built-in audio effects: Gain, Stereo width, EQ, Graphic EQ, Compressor, Limiter,
Gate, Distortion, Delay, Reverb, Chorus, Phaser, Tremolo, Vibrato, and Wah.

The Audio level node has a Source row: This comp, Layer, or Clip, with Peak and High
outputs beside the two it had.

Volume keyframes can be deleted and edited in graph view.

A Detach audio button on any row that is still a picture too, it cannot be edited in the
audio timeline until it is detached from it’s video source.

The camera

One/two-node cameras and camera settings dialogue under the Layer menu.

Depth of field renders.

Added the visibility switch on camera rows.

The camera tools work in the new model, plus a unified camera tool, and 3D views with
wireframes from the view picker on the Viewer bar.

Projects saved before this open with the camera ported, with no visual changes.

Viewers

Open as many Viewers as you like from the Window menu, each on its own comp. The Timeline,
effect controls, node graph, and Audio panel all follow whichever view you last selected.

A lock for each view, keeping its picture visible while you open another composition.

Each view carries its own magnification, channel, and exposure, unless Share view
options is ticked.

Compare two views as a wipe or a split screen with a draggable divider.

Effects

Pixel sort, after the Pixel Sorter plugin for After Effects. Runs of pixels between
Min and Max are put in order along their row or column, sorted by red, green, blue,
luminance, hue, or saturation, with Stretch and Mirror span modes (requested by @airyz).

Mood lighting under Stylise. Soft coloured light over the picture, with evolution
(requested by @scrutielicious).

Glow gets a Falloff slider that gathers the light into a bright core with a faint
reach, and chromatic aberration on the glows halo.

The shake’s motion blur has a Samples control, from 2 to 64 (issue reported by @requa_).

Smaller things

Moving the pointer across a clip’s thumbnail in the project panel scrubs it, and a sound
file gets a play button to preview audio.

Layer ▸ New shortcuts added.

A new layer lands directly above the selected layer rather than at the top of the stack.

Ctrl+Shift+D and the razor leave the second half selected instead of the first.

The shader editor has syntax highlighting for WGSL, and its border and text alignment
are fixed (with fixes from @Airyzz in #134).

OFX plugins now show only the controls they mark as visible, in the plugin’s own page
order, and are told when a value changes, so a control the plugin shows later turns up
when it should (issue reported by @requa_).

Performance

Footage wider or taller than 8192 pixels came out blank. It now decodes, and has reduced
memory usage.

The waveform lanes in the Audio workspace draw in one call, which is significantly faster.

Driver evaluation reuses its parameter arenas rather than allocating every frame (with
fixes from @maseckt in #130).

Expressions have limits on operations, string size, and array and map size, so a
runaway expression in a project can’t eat all your memory (with fixes from @maseckt in #133).

Lumit now keeps note of memory a render uses on the card and in RAM, with budgets read
from the machine, and eases before it runs out: it stops filling the cache, and hands
work to the card sooner. Settings ▸ Preview and cache shows both budgets, how full they
are, and how many requests were dismissed.

Motion blur samples are combined one at a time rather than all held at once, so 32
samples at 4K no longer keep 2 GB of finished pictures.

A particle layer under extreme retime could stall the render, and shader caches grew
without bound as you typed. Both are bounded now.

Fixed

OFX plugins failed on clips bigger than 1080p with “does not fit a ring slot” (reported by @requa_).

Hidden OFX parameters were drawn anyway, and changing a value never reached the plugin
(reported by @requa_).

Volume keyframes couldn’t be deleted (reported by @electricfx).

The playhead jumped a few frames at a time in adaptive playback rather than moving
smoothly.

Dropping footage from the project panel below the top row was two undo steps.

Project files, OCIO configs, EXRs and roto sidecars are read with size ceilings, so a
malformed or malicious file is refused (from the audit by @maseckt in #132).

Plugin brokers use unguessable names and a handshake, so another program on the machine
can’t pose as Lumit or as a plugin, and an OFX plugin has a memory quota.

Before you update

A retimed layer is now silent. Before this it wasn’t wired, so a retimed layer’s sound
played at its original speed.

A layer with its fx switch off no longer applies audio plugins, and a hosted audio
plugin runs at the export’s sample rate rather than always at 48 kHz.

The camera model has changed. Old projects are converted when they open and should look
the same, but if a camera shot looks off after updating please report it.

On Flatpak, Lumit now sees your home folder and removable drives rather than the whole
filesystem. A drive mounted elsewhere needs a flatpak override.

Known gaps

Viewers on a second monitor are not implemented until Flutter’s windowing API is stable.

A node’s box keyframes don’t show in the Timeline yet, and a graph placed as a precomp has
its Inputs in the engine but not on the layer’s rows. Both are next.

Mood lighting’s digital and streaks variants are not built.

The Audio timeline has no buses or sends yet, every rack is an insert.

Thanks very much for reading, and for all the reports and requests that went into this
one. Have a great time with it <33 I’ll possibly be able to get one small fix with any bugs
found out in the next few days, however from the middle of this week I will be gone until
the 4th of October, during which I cannot work on Lumit.

Lumit v0.3.3

OCIO configs now load, with fixes to accumulation motion blur and OFX on top.

A small follow-up to 0.3.2 for colour management, with a few fixes alongside it. The
OCIO configs would not load, since one unsupported transform anywhere in the file
refused the whole thing.

Fixed

Any config using AllocationTransform was refused.

A colour space could not be reached by one of its aliases, or by its name in a different case.

Camera log transforms written the way Blender’s config writes them were refused
as incomplete.

A config naming a transform Lumit does not do refused every view, even ones that never used it.

Accumulation motion blur on footage made its in-between moments with optical flow whether or not the layer used Flow, which sometimes caused artefacts. Those samples are now a crossfade of the two frames they fall
between, and only a layer with Flow enabled uses flow (reported by @billy17).

OFX plugins that need the frames either side of the current one didn’t work as intended, since every frame they asked for came back as the current frame (reported by @billy17).

Loading one OFX plugin under a compatibility name changed the host name every plugin
already loaded could see (with fixes from @maseckt in #129).

A layer output disconnected in the node graph came back connected after the project
was closed and reopened (with fixes from @maseckt in #128).

What is new

Look-up tables in .spimtx, FilmLight .cub, and Autodesk .3dl files are read.

Fifteen more of OCIO’s built-in transforms: the HLG and PQ curves and displays,
Apple Log, Canon Log 2 and 3, and the plain sRGB, Rec.1886, and P3 displays.

The ACES 1.3 SDR and 1000 nit HDR output transforms, so the ACES views in
Blender’s config work.

GradingPrimary and GradingTone transforms, which Blender’s AgX contrast and Punchy
looks are built from.

Project settings says how many of a config’s names are greyed out, and every
greyed out row says why.

Before you update

Accumulation motion blur on footage draws differently to 0.3.2, since a moment
between two frames only uses optical flow when the layer’s Retime is set to Flow.

Windows updates now run the installer, and the program is lumit.exe rather than the
old name, so if Lumit is pinned to your taskbar you will need to pin it again.

Downloads

Windows, macOS, and Linux builds are on Lumit Downloads and
GitHub releases.

Lumit v0.3.2

Multiple bug fixes, along with EXR support and fleshed out OCIO.

A follow-up to 0.3.1 with fixes and smaller features from the last week. Largely
fixes for crashes and bugs reported since 0.3.0 (thanks to everyone who has sent one
in), but EXR support, OCIO and a couple of Graph editor additions are in too. Please
keep reporting anything you find on GitHub or Discord so we can keep cleaning them up.

If you installed 0.3.1 within the first couple of hours they were released, the
downloads were later replaced with a fix for the blank Viewer on Linux (#104, reported
by @yawn3k and tracked down by @XDRANDYYYYYY). Skia
was only the backend when run from Flutter, a release build ignored it, so the Flatpak
and the .dmg still used Impeller, the .exe was unaffected. That fix is in this release
properly.

Fixed

Motion blur and Fast motion blur have swapped names. Fast motion blur is now Motion
blur, since it’s the one most people want, and what was Motion blur is now
Accumulation motion blur.

Adding Accumulation motion blur to an adjustment layer could crash, since every
sample sat in the one GPU submission and 8 samples held about 2GB at 1080p. Each
sample now goes to the card on its own (reported by @scrutielicious).

Accumulation motion blur blurred transforms and effects but not the change in a
footage layer’s picture, so a clip under it never blurred, AMB now applies to
footage as intended.

A linked Scale drew two curves in the Graph editor, so easing one axis left the
other linear and the picture stretched on the way. Linked properties now draw one
curve, and an edit moves both axes at their ratio (reported by @billy17).

Changing one half of a linked pair in the effect controls, once both halves were
keyframed, planted a key on one half and stretched the other half’s whole curve.

Keyed angles such as Twirl’s Angle opened to an empty graph.

Multiple issues with OFX items have fixed, they should now work as intended. If
there are still issues with specific OFX plugins, please report them (reported by
@requa_, with fixes from @XDRANDYYYYYY in #111).

OFX and CLAP plugins left a shared memory file in the temp folder every launch, half
a gigabyte each on Windows.

The filled buttons on the update windows drew their label in grey.

Updates download to Lumit’s cache folder rather than the temp folder, and the updater
refuses an attachment name that isn’t a bare file name. The release pipeline pins its
actions to commits and checks the FFmpeg download against a hash, from the security
report in #105 by @maseckt and additional comments by @Airyzz.

What is new

OpenEXR support. An EXR keeps its range above white and the precision in a depth
pass, rather than being crushed to 8 bpc. Export can write an OpenEXR sequence in
16/32fp.

Project settings ▸ Rendering ▸ Colour depth picks 8, 16 or 32 bits per channel
for the compositor. 8 is integer and 16/32 are floating point, before this every
project was 16fp.

Extract channels from EXRs. Four dropdowns of the file’s own channel names, so a
Z pass or a light group can be read into the picture.

Four OCIO effects under Effects ▸ Colour: OCIO colour space transform, OCIO
display transform, OCIO look transform, and OCIO file transform. The config ones list
the project’s config, the file one reads .cube, .spi1d, .spi3d, .clf, .ctf, and ASC
CDL files on its own.

Project settings ▸ Working space lets a project composite in its config’s
colourspace instead of linear Rec. 709.

Keyframe speed by value. Right-click a key in the graph for Keyframe speed, the
same window as Animation ▸ Keyframe speed, with speed and influence for each side
and a Continuous tick. Clicking the readout pill on a selected key opens the same
fields as a popover (requested by @billy17).

The Easing panel fills its width, labels its four handle numbers and shows the
selected key’s speed and influence under the box.

Middle-mouse panning in the Timeline and the Viewer. The Timeline pans both ways
at once, the Viewer only pans the picture (requested by @yawn3k).

Angle parameters display in graph view like any other value, and dragging a rotation
past 360 or 0 now increments the full turn.

A release can carry a warning that Lumit shows after the update is downloaded and
before deciding to restart, for anything a project may depend on.

Spanish and Polish are on the translation page.

Before you update

Accumulation Motion Blur (Formerly Motion Blur), now applies blur to the image of
a footage layer, as well as it’s transformations, effects, etc.

Downloads

Mainly just some small fixes to crashes and issues
launching the program. Also fixes updating from inside Lumit not working, so you will
have to install this version manually again (sorry), but all future versions with any
luck can be updated from within the application.

Fixed

Updating from inside Lumit downloaded the update, offered a restart, and then did
nothing, this was found on windows, macOS and Linux are still.

Lumit crashed when a value was dragged while the timeline was playing, and when a
clip carrying retime was scaled.

A panel whose contents could not be drawn showed a blank grey rectangle. It now
displays the fault and writes it to the diagnostics file.

Opening a project while one was already open left panels reading the closed
project.

A start-up that failed before the window appeared left Lumit running while displaying
nothing. It now opens a window explaining the error.

The start-up scan opened console windows when finding plugins.

OFX plugins that set their own controls while loading refused to apply.

An OFX suite installed in a folder of its own was not found.

Linux and macOS ran Flutter’s Impeller renderer rather than Skia.

On Linux the window asked to be maximised before it existed.

In the Graph editor’s speed view, a dragged keyframe ran ahead of the pointer and
jumped back to the pointer when it was released.

What is new

Settings ▸ Performance ▸ Full resolution while dragging renders a value drag at
the Viewer’s own resolution rather than the reduced one. Off by default.

Downloads

Windows, macOS (Apple silicon) and Linux builds of v0.3.1 are on the

with many smaller changes and additional features. The introduction of the node system in
Lumit, along with the beginnings of the audio workspace. Tracking, Roto, and Puppet
tools are all included in this release as well. Lumit now also supports OFX,
CLAP and VST3 instruments. After Effects projects that you can directly port, with builtin
and some 3rd party effects transferring across too.

This is still a beta. With a large update comes a large number of bugs and issues, please
test and report any issues so that we can clean them all up before the next release.

What is new

The new UI

With this update every panel has been rebuilt: Timeline, Viewer, Project, Effect
controls, Settings, Welcome screen, Export, etc.

Despite this, Lumit is still largely customisable, with themes still altering colors
application-wide, and Sharp/Round options, as well as a basic density toggle. You can
also adjust if text is displayed, or icons, across many parts of the ui.

The webpage for Lumit has recieved an overhaul too ^_^

If you find any issues with the look or improvements, feedback is welcome, and we want
to make this as accessible to as many users as possible.

The Timeline

Two views: Layers for bars and summary keys, Graph for the
curves and customising keyframes.

The addition of a navigator above the timeline ruler, which indicates the playhead
position, as well as the region of the composition you’re zoomed in on

Keyframe shapes in the layer view are altered by their interpolation, which can be
different on each half of the keyframe.

Marquee selection, add items to a selection with shift, and clicking a property’s
name selects all its keys. Drag the edge of the marquee to strech out all the keyframes
that are selected within it.

Certain columns of the outline area can be adjusted to hide items you may not need. For
instance you can alter the width of the switches, modes, and hide the parent column.

The node graph

An alternative way to composite. It works seamlessly with the effect controls stack. With
this you can wire effects into each other, and create inputs driven by layers or randomness.
The node workspace is built with nodes being the centre of your workflow.

Wire types have colours, to indicate what can be wired.

The introduction of a point stream, which outputs a list of positions which can be used to
drive behaviour.

Custom shader: write WGSL and it acts as a regular effect. To access double click it.

The viewer can now also display what an effect does to a layer with a new “at effect” preview
that appears when selecting a node or an effect.

The Audio workspace

Still a lot of work required to make Lumit capable of doing audio work properly. But these are
some of the parts that have been included in this release.

A Mixer with a strip per row with sound in the composition, and a master fader ahead of a
limiter.

Pan, as a constant-power balance.

Fades are keyframe pairs, if you have issues with these, they are likely going to be changed
in the next release.

Beat detection writes markers and numbers bars from a grid the project keeps.

A spectral lane per layer, drawn from a tiled spectrogram, beside the waveform lane.

Lower behind ducks one layer under another, wired through a Volume socket on the
Layer out box.

Detach audio copies a layer’s sound onto a sibling.

Audio-only export is possible.

Plugins

Lumit is an OFX host. Plugins installed are found at start-up and sit beside the
built-in effects, grouped, searchable, and starrable like any other.

CLAP and VST3 instruments and effects host as inserts in a layer’s own audio chain.

After Effects effect import OFX plugins when they are installed and availalbe in Lumit,
if not, if Lumit has it’s own version of the effect it transfers to that instead for
specific effects.

After Effects projects

Lumit imports
.aep
files directly, under File ▸ Import ▸ After Effects project.

Keyframes carry across value for value, along with eases. Masks, mattes, parenting,
markers, and blend modes are also imported.

There may still be some bugs when importing projects from AE, so please report those.
Additionally, there is currently not support for transferring expressions to Lumit.

Tracking

Camera track solves a shot: pose per frame, focal per segment, a point cloud you can
select from, and a Camera layer linked to the solve.

Planar track solves for a surface, and can add the track to a corner pin effect, or
follow one or two points, and Create transform keys bakes it onto a layer’s
Position, Rotation and Scale - added to what is already there.

Roto brush and Puppet

Roto brush: scribble on a frame, and the matte propagates through the shot on the
in-tree optical flow, if it is incorrect, you can update as you go.

Puppet: pins on a conforming mesh, four tools available for it in the Viewer.

Paint, shapes and text

Paint strokes land on any layer that draws, and if using a tablet, adjust width based on
pressure.

Shape modifiers: Trim paths, Repeater, Offset path, dashes, gradient fill, and a boolean
combine of two shapes.

A shape’s path can be morphed by keying the path.

Text animators: one selector, two shapes and five property groups. Text can also be
placed on a mask path, and convert into shapes or points.

Particles and the points family

Particulate is the first particle tool in Lumit. Emit particles from a point or shape
and set how they move and evolve over their lifespan. Particles live in 3D space and moving
the composition’s camera adjusts the view of them.

A points stream is carried on a wire, and six effects produce or consume one: Grid,
Scatter, Emit from image, Clone to points, Trail and Connect points.

Effects

Now with over one hundred built in effects, Generate and Transition categories are new.

Every effect can be driven by a matte, through one row that picks its channel, and a
Mix row that picks its blend. These aim to adjust the strength of an effect per pixel,
but for more infomation visit the effect docs.

Curves and levels now have an interactive curve and histogram respectively.

Expression controls - slider, angle, checkbox, colour and point added to help control
expressions or other effects.

Drivers, are controls used specifically for driving values in the node graph, with several
options built in currently, with an expression driver planned.

The physical lens flare gained spectral ghosts, Fresnel edges, a field-dependent
starburst and per-element coatings.

Every distance and every point is measured in pixels at composition size. No effect
uses percentages of the composition width anymore.

Colour, export and media

Five built-in colour spaces, and a resize that picks a filter.

The export dialogue is one page with a table of contents. If the format you’re exporting
doesn’t support a section it appears disabled.

Proxies are a second media reference which you can generate from any layer. It displays
in the project panel if a proxy is in use, and exporting will by default re-render with the
actual layers.

A folder of numbered stills imports as one footage item.

Smaller things

Guide layers: a per-layer switch.

Layer groups: groups layers within a composition without precomping them.

An Easing panel of curve tiles that apply on click.

Rulers and guides on the panel, with the magnet.

Snapshots photograph the visible region at the resolution it is drawn at.

A workspace can be saved.

Effect console can be accessed with Ctrl+Space.

Every Project row carries a hue square that sets its label, and a folder’s colour tints
what it holds.

A composition remembers where you were, and a precomp opens on the frame it is showing.

Translation has moved off Crowdin and onto the site.

Performance

The Timeline builds only the rows in view and reuses them across a scroll.

A drag asks the engine nothing about a document it is not changing, and an edit’s
work is one wave rather than a call per item.

Each effect’s output is kept, so editing the last effect in a stack re-composites only that
one. A precomp’s frames cache as one unit, and layers under a full-frame opaque layer are
not rendered at all.

The idle cache fill wraps the work area and keeps going into RAM.

A lost graphics device is rebuilt.

Known gaps

Colour management is half built: the OCIO implementation is in, the surfaces around it
are not finished.

Custom shader nodes - the graph inside a shader - are still to come; the shader effect
itself is here.

Lights and camera depth of field are not built. Layers are planes in space.

Roto brush propagation is well over its frame budget on the classical path, so long
shots are slow.

Fixed

The razor cuts through an eased speed ramp without moving the keys either side.

Changing a composition’s frame rate leaves the playhead where it was in time.

An animated aperture no longer stops the lens flare’s frames from caching.

A beat source picked by name is always heard, whatever the comp mix is doing.

A layer added into a composition that has a solo up is born soloed.

Tile’s output window is centred on the tile centre.

A click on a row that is already the lone selection is not a second command.

A project saved under a bare name gets
.lum
.

I’m sure there’s a lot more to all these sections, but considering how large an update it’s been these are
some of the main items. With this, going forward releases should be smaller again, and with some many new
people looking to try it, we’ll aim to make sure it doesn’t impact any work you begin in Lumit now!

Thanks very much for reading, and I hope you have a great time using and testing Lumit <33

Lumit v0.2.0

Expressions, lens flares, update directly from the app, and updated installers for macOS and Linux.

Two hundred and twenty-two commits since 0.1.0, a of which are minor changes and
hopefully improvements. As well as expressions implemented largely by Airyz as a
way to drive properties. There is also the new Lens Flare plugin, Flow
re-implemented (with improved motion vectors still needing to be implemented).
On all platforms you can now update the application through the app, removing any
need to download and setup the application on each update, and linux builds now
come in a flatpak, and macOS has signed .dmg’s

What is new

Expressions

A numeric property can be driven by a script instead of keyframes — Rhai, with

time
, the composition around it, and the document to read from. Point and
colour properties cannot be driven yet.

Text layers take their words from an expression, so counters and readouts
update as the playhead moves.

The editor autocompletes function names, and the graph editor draws the curve
an expression is producing across the visible range.

Lens flare

A new flare effect that traces ghosts through a lens rather than stamping
sprites: calibrated optics, focus distance, closed-loop exposure and a
Fourier starburst.

A library of over a thousand real lenses, searchable, plus
.lens
files so a
flare you have set up can be sent to somebody else.

Light sources can take their colour from the picture underneath, and the whole
effect is bounded so it cannot run away with a frame’s budget.

Lens flares currently work’s as up to 8 point sources, there are plans to
support area’s as a lens source but this is a current limitation

Installing and updating

macOS gets a signed disc image and Linux a Flatpak.

Check for updates is in the windows menu, and an update arrives. On Windows,
Lumit installs per user and replaces itself in place.

Timeline and Viewer

Markers are draggable flags; By default shift and a digit places a numbered one.

Snapping/Magnet properly working for all items in timeline, and holding Ctrl
ignores snapping.

Zoom holds the playhead as it moves, and has been updated as a slider rather than
+/- buttons to press.

Audio waveforms retain resolution when zoomed, can stack by frequency band, and
can switch between sitting in the middle of a row or the bottom. The last two
are options that can be changed in settings.

Locking a layer now prevents any action that would change the render.

Time readouts no longer offset other items next to them and can be typed into.

Shape paths are editable in the viewer.

Anti-aliasing is a project property, with up to eight samples. The project
default can be adjusted in settings.

Viewer now doesn’t have interpolation on by default, but this can be re-enabled
in settings.

Project settings now have their own menu separate from the normal settings window.

Effects can be reordered by dragging in the Effects panel.

Menus navigate by hover: crossing a heading hands over to it, and resting on a
row flies its submenu out.

Themes, shortcuts and the clipboard

Themes can be imported/exported as a
.lumtheme
file. Themes from a newer build
are back compatible and simply ignore unused keys.

Layers and effects copy and paste, including to and from the system clipboard.
This can be done from both the timeline, or in the effect controls.

Language framework

Every word now comes from one British-English file, and translations can be worked
on from there. Labels, effect/parameter names, shortcut descriptions — are looked
up based on their English text.

Settings > Interface > Language picks a language and defaults to your machine.
Nothing is translated yet: German, Ukrainian, Kazakh and Simplified/Traditional
Chinese are open for translation and their files are currently empty, so every word
falls back to English. Help is welcome!

Knowing where the time goes

Per-layer and per-effect render times in the Timeline and effect control panel,
with a switch that removes the column when you turn measuring off.

Memory report can be found in the performance settings in debug mode,
counting what the graphics driver is holding vs. what Lumit holds.

A progress bar now appears when rendering a frame to preview.

Fixed

The disk cache could queue writes without limit on an idle Mac, which is now
resolved.

A LUT never checked it’s domain, and a LUT file changing on disk did
not invalidate its cache in the project. Both now resolved.

A precomposition used as a matte now gates correctly, and the layer under it
keeps its effects’ pixels.

Channel view could break the viewer. Now only affects preview as intended.

Dragging a keyframe in a lane moved it one frame and stopped.

The Viewer re-created its render target every frame instead of keeping one per
size.

A frame now hands the driver one command buffer rather than one per layer.

A fast, reliable, editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Lumit’s first release. It is a native motion-graphics and compositing
editor — Built with Rust, with Flutter for the frontend — built with Windows,
macOS, and Linux. This release provides the foundations and really is just a
test of our release system. Built already; compositions, layers, keyframes,
playback, and tools to start making something move.

What is new

(Literally everything, also if you’re reading the first release notes in the
future, Hi <^_^> )

Compositions with layers, keyframes and nesting — precompose a selection with
Ctrl+Shift+C, and nested compositions composite with proper transparency.

Shape layers and paint, with a toolbar carrying the shape, paint and camera tools.

Vegas-style retiming and a sequence view for arranging clips in order.

Layer ends are draggable handles, limited by the source footage, and keyframes
report their true positions on the timeline.

Three-tier frame cache — GPU, RAM and disk, with frames written to disk while the
editor is idle.

A colour dropper that reads the value under any pixel, from whatever layer the
property asks for, and a picker that applies its colour live as you drag.

A full menu bar with nine menus; on macOS it is the system menu bar.

Composition tabs reorder by dragging, timeline drops land where they are aimed,
and the zoom buttons hold the middle of the view in place.

Missing footage is displayed as such in the comp and project panel, and file paths
stay private to your machine.

The first slice of keyboard shortcuts, with property disclosure showing what
each key reveals.

Fixed

It can only go downhill from here.
