Revamped 3D, shape modifiers and groups, improved Easing, Align, and Notes panels, and many small adjustments.

All releases
v0.10.0

3D has received a large overhaul, with lights, shadows, materials, multiple 3D views alongside the viewer, and improved camera tools. Modifiers and groups have been added to shape layers, and Easing, Align, and Notes panels are added or improved, along with updated default layouts for the workspaces.

With these changes, they may alter how your existing projects look, largely due to the revamp of 3D comps and shape layers, so make sure to check the Before you update section.

What is new

3D

  • Lights can cast shadows from 3D layers, and 3D layers now have a Material option for how it interacts with light and whether it casts or accepts shadows.
  • The Viewer has 3D handles and rotation rings, for layers, cameras, and lights, with Local, World, and View axes in the tool options.
  • A 3D viewport can open alongside the Viewer. Each view keeps its own 3D view.
  • Orbit, dolly, track, and fly round the scene, with Alt. F10 to F12 jump between saved views, and Look at selected layers, Look at all layers, and Reset 3D view are in the View menu.
  • 3D layers now draw and occulude based if they are in front of other layers, and a comp with no camera uses a default until a camera is added.
  • Added camera’s depth of field for 3D layers.
  • Expressions have toComp, fromComp, lookAt, Orientation, and other 3D conversions.

Shape layers

  • Repeater, Trim paths, Offset paths, Twist, Deform, and Smooth are now entries in a shape layer’s contents. Each acts on every shape above it, so they can be stacked, and shapes can be put in groups.
  • Expand copies turns a repeater’s copies into shapes of their own, or into layers.
  • Rectangles, ellipses, polygons, and stars can be changed after they’re drawn.
  • A shape’s fill, outline colour, outline width, and opacity can be keyframed, and a fill or outline can be added or removed.
  • Layer ▸ Create ▸ Shapes from vector layer turns an Illustrator layer’s paths into a shape layer, and Split into shape layers makes a layer for each letter, path, or group.
  • Drawing with a shape tool on a selected shape layer adds the new shape to it.

Panels

  • The Easing panel has been rebuilt, with Built in and Yours tabs for presets.
  • An Align panel lines layers up to each other or to the composition.
  • A Notes panel, with its text kept in the project.
  • The shipped workspaces have been updated to make more use of stacks and the updated panels.
  • The Graph editor has an acceleration graph.

Multi-edit and friends

  • File ▸ Shared project… is now Multi-edit…, and File ▸ Previews… is now Share preview….
  • Settings ▸ Account has a username and friends. Add someone by their username, and send them previews and Multi-edit invites directly.

Effects

  • Particulate has Trails, flocking, and sparks on death, and colliders can sit anywhere in 3D.
  • Vector blur effect added.
  • Grid has a Lines type.
  • Repeat start and Repeat end boxes in node graphs.

After Effects Imports

  • After Effects projects bring across shape and text layers, light keyframes, Material options, and Orientation.
  • After Effects preset folders are kept when importing, and Effects & presets groups presets by folder, with groups that can be made, renamed, and deleted.
  • Ctrl+Alt+Home centres the anchor point.
  • Shift-dragging the curve in the Graph editor moves the middle of an ease.
  • Text has After Effects’ fill and stroke order.

Smaller things

  • Animated GIF export.
  • Exports on Linux can use VAAPI on AMD and Intel cards.
  • Path handles can be edited in the Viewer.
  • Right-clicking under the rows in the Cut and Audio timelines inserts an empty Audio, Sequence, or Adjustment layer.
  • Text animator values have a Reset.
  • The font list shows each font in its own face, and U shows text animator keys.
  • Scrubbing past the edge of the Timeline scrolls it.
  • Lumit asks before quitting while an export is running.
  • The disk cache has one size cap across all projects, and prevents going below 10 GB free storage on the drive.
  • Plugins installed in the Flatpak are now found.
  • Making an account asks for a date of birth.
  • Italian has 76 more strings (thanks to @andrea68git), and other languages have had many their translations autofilled, if you notice mistakes please let me know, or help contribute.

Performance

  • Audio plugins are remembered after the first scan, so a large collection of VST3s no longer slows down every start (with fixes from @maiadere in #466).
  • The Viewer no longer asks the engine about the comp on every pointer move.
  • The shader graph’s cache no longer grows on every drag.
  • A plain 3D solid under a depth of field camera is only drawn at full size when it’s actually blurred.

Fixed

  • Phone clips filmed upright showed on their side.
  • Dragging a value box made an undo step for every move.
  • A shape item’s path keys couldn’t be edited in the Graph editor, a shape that crossed itself had holes in its fill, and clicking a shape item’s name didn’t pick it.
  • A shape item’s opacity jumped while it was dragged, and dragging a point keyed shape items it didn’t touch.
  • The track overlay drew points from every frame, not just the current one.
  • Roto brush frames drawn before a propagation kept showing no cut-out.
  • Moving or deleting the last clip on a row in the Audio timeline left an empty row behind.
  • Soloing a picture layer silenced the sound.
  • A frame of an image sequence that wouldn’t read left a gap instead of its neighbour.
  • Updating on Windows could stop when a file was in use, or when a plugin’s helper closed by itself.

Before you update

  • 3D layers now draw nearest in front and cut through each other where they cross, as in After Effects, whatever their order in the Timeline. A 3D comp can look different.
  • 3D layers in a comp with no camera layer are now seen through a default camera, with perspective, as After Effects does.
  • A camera’s depth of field now blurs 3D layers by their distance to the camera.
  • A shape whose outline crosses itself is now filled where it crosses.
  • Where shapes were combined and the first carried a repeater, an offset, a twist, or a deform, the layer’s box now holds the copies of the whole run, which it used to cut off at the edge.
  • A phone clip filmed upright now shows upright. It used to show on its side.
  • A project saved with shape modifiers or groups won’t open in 0.9.1 or earlier.

Known gaps

  • The Easing panel can’t apply an ease to one side of a key only yet.
  • Corner pin and other warps still stay inside the picture they’re handed in a node graph.
  • Arabic still reads left to right.

Thanks very much to everyone who sent in reports and requests for this release. I hope you enjoy using it.
