Every release of Lumit. For the newest release update Lumit or download from download page.

Lumit now has three interface styles and twelve new colour themes. Addons are in, with the first local models for depth, background removal, frame synthesis, and the Roto brush. The node graph has several improvements, the Viewer draws motion paths, and fixes from the backlog.

What is new

Styles and themes

  • Two new interface styles, Desk and Lantern, beside the old one, which is now called Studio. Switch between them under Settings ▸ Appearance ▸ Shape.
  • Twelve new colour themes, each with a light and a dark variant.
  • The toolbar can sit on the left, and the Viewer has a Deck arrangement.
  • Range sliders on effect rows can be turned off.
  • The Round style is gone, and a workspace saved with it opens as Lantern.

Addons

Addons are still experimental and may be updated going forward. So please give feedback. Currently they provide some ML models to assist in certain areas of the program. We will never add genAI to addons. Going forward we also want to open this up to be able to install addons from other users.

  • Settings has an Addons page. It lists what is installed, and Check for addons shows what else is available.
  • The first packs are Depth generation, Remove background, RIFE frame synthesis as an Engine option under Flow, and SAM 2 seeding for the Roto brush.

Node graphs

  • The Timeline shows the node graph under the ruler when a node graph comp is open, and the effect controls show the picked box’s properties (requested by @Airyzz in #153).
  • Effects can be dragged in from Effects & presets, and right click, Tab, or Shift+A open node search at the pointer. Each can be turned off under Settings ▸ Timeline.
  • Boxes copy and paste, and undo removes a paste in one step.
  • Split channels and Combine channels boxes. Combine takes luminance from each input by default, or a channel picked per input.
  • An Expression driver box, with Value, Colour, Point x, and Point y outputs.

The Viewer

  • A selected layer’s motion path is drawn as a wireframe.
  • A layer with keyed position now has a box in the Viewer, so it can be picked on the picture.

Audio

  • Audio effects on a Precomp layer now work and treat precomp audio as a single audio source.
  • Detect beats shows how far it has progressed.

Smaller things

  • The scroll wheel modifiers can be changed under Settings ▸ Shortcuts ▸ Scroll wheel, for zooming the Timeline, scrolling it sideways, zooming graph values, and the dropper sample size (requested by @politohh).
  • An image sequence’s frame rate can be set from its menu in the project panel.
  • Levels has channel buttons, so its handles work on one channel at a time.
  • The command palette remembers what you last ran after Lumit closes, and every row shows its shortcut.
  • Timeline twirls and effect control folds are saved with the project.
  • Footage Lumit can’t decode shows an unreadable badge rather than importing silently.
  • An After Effects project whose layers can’t be read now imports its footage anyway and explains the issue. Casts Shadows and keyframed dropdowns in colour effects are reported too.
  • Scanlines and the lens flare scale with the comp size, so a precomp at a different size looks the same.
  • OFX bundles that keep their own DLLs beside the plugin now load (reported by @politohh).
  • Pixel sort has a Random offset scale control, and a span can be up to 4096 pixels long rather than 1024, so it can cover the whole width of a larger picture (with fixes from @Airyzz in #175).
  • Arabic and Brazilian Portuguese are on the translation page and in the language list.

Performance

  • The effect controls redraw far less when you pick or delete an effect.
  • Clicking a row in the project panel rebuilds far fewer widgets.
  • Corner detection is faster.
  • Layers hidden under a rotated or scaled layer that covers the frame are no longer drawn for increased render speeds.

Fixed

  • On laptops with two graphics cards the Viewer was blank while the sound played (reported by @liquidsvfx).
  • Dragging a keyed mask’s points in the Viewer snapped back on release, and Delete key on a Path key did nothing (reported by @edup).
  • Pressing Delete in the effect controls, or on an effect row in the Timeline, deleted the layer.
  • Effects and presets were added to every selected layer instead of one.
  • Relinked footage on a different drive to the project went missing again on reopen.
  • After a relink the Viewer kept showing colour bars and the missing files count, and the clip had no speaker switch.
  • A relinked image sequence kept its old frame range.
  • Double clicking the relink badge opened New composition.
  • The glow had a hard square edge at high intensity.
  • Switching from graph view back to layer view scrolled the lane area to the top.
  • Plugin on/off parameters never reached the plugin.
  • Mirror, Lens distort, Drop shadow, Transform, Shake motion blur, Directional blur, and Radial blur could leave a stray pixel at the edge of the frame.
  • Clicking a switch on a locked layer threw an error.
  • A crash before a project was opened wasn’t written to the crash log.
  • The Settings scrollbar thumb jumped.
  • Lumit’s icon was missing on Linux (with fixes from @Airyzz in #176).
  • Boxes in the node graph were drawn outside of its panel (with fixes from @Airyzz in #177).
  • Edit shader and Load from file did nothing on a Custom shader box in a node graph, and the node panel’s buttons were greyed out.
  • Rows declared by a Custom shader, such as Gain or Tint, had no socket in the node graph, so nothing could be wired into them.

Before you update

  • The glow is drawn differently, so projects with a glow will look a little different. This is most noticeable with Falloff values above 0.
  • Beat tap has moved from 8 to the / key, since the number keys now create numbered markers.

Known gaps

  • Motion path tangent handles are drawn but can’t be dragged yet, and the path redraws on release.
  • Arabic reads left to right for now.

I will be gone for the next two weeks, once I return all work on Lumit will no longer use AI assistance. Thanks very much for all the reports and requests that went into this release. I hope this fixes some of the issues people had and you can enjoy using Lumit!

The second half of the node graph is built, and an entire composition can be built within the node graph, with both branching and merging. The audio workspace has a all new audio timeline, containing only audio and allowing for more complex audio work. The camera has been overhauled to fix issue with it’s transform properties, and provide additional controls. And finally the viewer has been rebuilt to allow for multiple items open. There are also a couple of new effects, and several fixes.

Still beta, so please test and report anything that isn’t right so that we can clean it all up before the next release. Future releases will likely focus more on cleaning up and QoL items to aim for the main release, so if there’s something missing or helpful we can add please tell us!

What is new

Node graphs

  • A node graph is now a form of composition. Composition ▸ New node graph (or the project panel’s menu) makes one, with Read boxes bringing footage and comps in, an Output box at the end, and wires that branch and merge in-between. This is built from the proposal in #106 (requested by @Airyzz).
  • Merge and Switch boxes. Merge lays one picture over another with a blend mode and opacity, and Switch shows whichever of its inputs the Index says, so a driver or a keyframe can flick between pictures.
  • Any effect or driver is a box, so its rows keyframe, take expressions and take wires exactly as they do on a layer. Points wires work inside a graph too.
  • Apply a node graph to a layer as an effect. The layer’s picture goes in as the graph’s first Input, the graph’s other Inputs become the effect’s rows, and the Output is what comes back out.
  • Time inside a graph. Echo, Motion blur, Datamosh, Posterize time and the accumulation motion blur all read their input box at the times they need, and a new Time offset box shows its input shifted in time.
  • Expressions can read a graph’s Input by name with input("Name").
  • Sound comes through a graph’s Read boxes.
  • Precomp layers can be retimed. Retime on a precomp maps the nested comp’s time the way it does on footage.

The Audio timeline

  • The Audio workspace has its own timeline, built for mixing. Every row is a track with mute, solo, an fx switch, a twirl onto Volume and its own effects rack, and a Wave or Spectral display option on the right.
  • Tracks hold clips. Trim them, slide them, drag one onto another track, overlap two for a crossfade, drag the top corners for fades, and right click for the five fade shapes or a custom curve. Each clip has its own gain line and its own effects.
  • In the layer Timeline, a comp that has been edited in the Audio timeline shows a Sound mix row at the bottom with the audio layers folded behind it. Double click it to open the Audio workspace, or right click to convert the mix to a precomp.
  • Fifteen built-in audio effects: Gain, Stereo width, EQ, Graphic EQ, Compressor, Limiter, Gate, Distortion, Delay, Reverb, Chorus, Phaser, Tremolo, Vibrato, and Wah.
  • The Audio level node has a Source row: This comp, Layer, or Clip, with Peak and High outputs beside the two it had.
  • Volume keyframes can be deleted and edited in graph view.
  • A Detach audio button on any row that is still a picture too, it cannot be edited in the audio timeline until it is detached from it’s video source.

The camera

  • One/two-node cameras and camera settings dialogue under the Layer menu.
  • Depth of field renders.
  • Added the visibility switch on camera rows.
  • The camera tools work in the new model, plus a unified camera tool, and 3D views with wireframes from the view picker on the Viewer bar.
  • Projects saved before this open with the camera ported, with no visual changes.

Viewers

  • Open as many Viewers as you like from the Window menu, each on its own comp. The Timeline, effect controls, node graph, and Audio panel all follow whichever view you last selected.
  • A lock for each view, keeping its picture visible while you open another composition.
  • Each view carries its own magnification, channel, and exposure, unless Share view options is ticked.
  • Compare two views as a wipe or a split screen with a draggable divider.

Effects

  • Pixel sort, after the Pixel Sorter plugin for After Effects. Runs of pixels between Min and Max are put in order along their row or column, sorted by red, green, blue, luminance, hue, or saturation, with Stretch and Mirror span modes (requested by @airyz).
  • Mood lighting under Stylise. Soft coloured light over the picture, with evolution (requested by @scrutielicious).
  • Glow gets a Falloff slider that gathers the light into a bright core with a faint reach, and chromatic aberration on the glows halo.
  • The shake’s motion blur has a Samples control, from 2 to 64 (issue reported by @requa_).

Smaller things

  • Moving the pointer across a clip’s thumbnail in the project panel scrubs it, and a sound file gets a play button to preview audio.
  • Layer ▸ New shortcuts added.
  • A new layer lands directly above the selected layer rather than at the top of the stack.
  • Ctrl+Shift+D and the razor leave the second half selected instead of the first.
  • The shader editor has syntax highlighting for WGSL, and its border and text alignment are fixed (with fixes from @Airyzz in #134).
  • OFX plugins now show only the controls they mark as visible, in the plugin’s own page order, and are told when a value changes, so a control the plugin shows later turns up when it should (issue reported by @requa_).

Performance

  • Footage wider or taller than 8192 pixels came out blank. It now decodes, and has reduced memory usage.
  • The waveform lanes in the Audio workspace draw in one call, which is significantly faster.
  • Driver evaluation reuses its parameter arenas rather than allocating every frame (with fixes from @maseckt in #130).
  • Expressions have limits on operations, string size, and array and map size, so a runaway expression in a project can’t eat all your memory (with fixes from @maseckt in #133).
  • Lumit now keeps note of memory a render uses on the card and in RAM, with budgets read from the machine, and eases before it runs out: it stops filling the cache, and hands work to the card sooner. Settings ▸ Preview and cache shows both budgets, how full they are, and how many requests were dismissed.
  • Motion blur samples are combined one at a time rather than all held at once, so 32 samples at 4K no longer keep 2 GB of finished pictures.
  • A particle layer under extreme retime could stall the render, and shader caches grew without bound as you typed. Both are bounded now.

Fixed

  • OFX plugins failed on clips bigger than 1080p with “does not fit a ring slot” (reported by @requa_).
  • Hidden OFX parameters were drawn anyway, and changing a value never reached the plugin (reported by @requa_).
  • Volume keyframes couldn’t be deleted (reported by @electricfx).
  • The playhead jumped a few frames at a time in adaptive playback rather than moving smoothly.
  • Dropping footage from the project panel below the top row was two undo steps.
  • Project files, OCIO configs, EXRs and roto sidecars are read with size ceilings, so a malformed or malicious file is refused (from the audit by @maseckt in #132).
  • Plugin brokers use unguessable names and a handshake, so another program on the machine can’t pose as Lumit or as a plugin, and an OFX plugin has a memory quota.

Before you update

  • A retimed layer is now silent. Before this it wasn’t wired, so a retimed layer’s sound played at its original speed.
  • A layer with its fx switch off no longer applies audio plugins, and a hosted audio plugin runs at the export’s sample rate rather than always at 48 kHz.
  • The camera model has changed. Old projects are converted when they open and should look the same, but if a camera shot looks off after updating please report it.
  • On Flatpak, Lumit now sees your home folder and removable drives rather than the whole filesystem. A drive mounted elsewhere needs a flatpak override.

Known gaps

  • Viewers on a second monitor are not implemented until Flutter’s windowing API is stable.
  • A node’s box keyframes don’t show in the Timeline yet, and a graph placed as a precomp has its Inputs in the engine but not on the layer’s rows. Both are next.
  • Mood lighting’s digital and streaks variants are not built.
  • The Audio timeline has no buses or sends yet, every rack is an insert.

Thanks very much for reading, and for all the reports and requests that went into this one. Have a great time with it <33 I’ll possibly be able to get one small fix with any bugs found out in the next few days, however from the middle of this week I will be gone until the 4th of October, during which I cannot work on Lumit.

A small follow-up to 0.3.2 for colour management, with a few fixes alongside it. The OCIO configs would not load, since one unsupported transform anywhere in the file refused the whole thing.

Fixed

  • Any config using AllocationTransform was refused.
  • A colour space could not be reached by one of its aliases, or by its name in a different case.
  • Camera log transforms written the way Blender’s config writes them were refused as incomplete.
  • A config naming a transform Lumit does not do refused every view, even ones that never used it.
  • Accumulation motion blur on footage made its in-between moments with optical flow whether or not the layer used Flow, which sometimes caused artefacts. Those samples are now a crossfade of the two frames they fall between, and only a layer with Flow enabled uses flow (reported by @billy17).
  • OFX plugins that need the frames either side of the current one didn’t work as intended, since every frame they asked for came back as the current frame (reported by @billy17).
  • Loading one OFX plugin under a compatibility name changed the host name every plugin already loaded could see (with fixes from @maseckt in #129).
  • A layer output disconnected in the node graph came back connected after the project was closed and reopened (with fixes from @maseckt in #128).

What is new

  • Look-up tables in .spimtx, FilmLight .cub, and Autodesk .3dl files are read.
  • Fifteen more of OCIO’s built-in transforms: the HLG and PQ curves and displays, Apple Log, Canon Log 2 and 3, and the plain sRGB, Rec.1886, and P3 displays.
  • The ACES 1.3 SDR and 1000 nit HDR output transforms, so the ACES views in Blender’s config work.
  • GradingPrimary and GradingTone transforms, which Blender’s AgX contrast and Punchy looks are built from.
  • Project settings says how many of a config’s names are greyed out, and every greyed out row says why.

Before you update

  • Accumulation motion blur on footage draws differently to 0.3.2, since a moment between two frames only uses optical flow when the layer’s Retime is set to Flow.
  • Windows updates now run the installer, and the program is lumit.exe rather than the old name, so if Lumit is pinned to your taskbar you will need to pin it again.

Downloads

Windows, macOS, and Linux builds are on Lumit Downloads and GitHub releases.

A follow-up to 0.3.1 with fixes and smaller features from the last week. Largely fixes for crashes and bugs reported since 0.3.0 (thanks to everyone who has sent one in), but EXR support, OCIO and a couple of Graph editor additions are in too. Please keep reporting anything you find on GitHub or Discord so we can keep cleaning them up.

If you installed 0.3.1 within the first couple of hours they were released, the downloads were later replaced with a fix for the blank Viewer on Linux (#104, reported by @yawn3k and tracked down by @XDRANDYYYYYY). Skia
was only the backend when run from Flutter, a release build ignored it, so the Flatpak and the .dmg still used Impeller, the .exe was unaffected. That fix is in this release properly.

Fixed

  • Motion blur and Fast motion blur have swapped names. Fast motion blur is now Motion blur, since it’s the one most people want, and what was Motion blur is now Accumulation motion blur.
  • Adding Accumulation motion blur to an adjustment layer could crash, since every sample sat in the one GPU submission and 8 samples held about 2GB at 1080p. Each sample now goes to the card on its own (reported by @scrutielicious).
  • Accumulation motion blur blurred transforms and effects but not the change in a footage layer’s picture, so a clip under it never blurred, AMB now applies to footage as intended.
  • A linked Scale drew two curves in the Graph editor, so easing one axis left the other linear and the picture stretched on the way. Linked properties now draw one curve, and an edit moves both axes at their ratio (reported by @billy17).
  • Changing one half of a linked pair in the effect controls, once both halves were keyframed, planted a key on one half and stretched the other half’s whole curve.
  • Keyed angles such as Twirl’s Angle opened to an empty graph.
  • Multiple issues with OFX items have fixed, they should now work as intended. If there are still issues with specific OFX plugins, please report them (reported by @requa_, with fixes from @XDRANDYYYYYY in #111).
  • OFX and CLAP plugins left a shared memory file in the temp folder every launch, half a gigabyte each on Windows.
  • The filled buttons on the update windows drew their label in grey.
  • Updates download to Lumit’s cache folder rather than the temp folder, and the updater refuses an attachment name that isn’t a bare file name. The release pipeline pins its actions to commits and checks the FFmpeg download against a hash, from the security report in #105 by @maseckt and additional comments by @Airyzz.

What is new

  • OpenEXR support. An EXR keeps its range above white and the precision in a depth pass, rather than being crushed to 8 bpc. Export can write an OpenEXR sequence in 16/32fp.
  • Project settings ▸ Rendering ▸ Colour depth picks 8, 16 or 32 bits per channel for the compositor. 8 is integer and 16/32 are floating point, before this every project was 16fp.
  • Extract channels from EXRs. Four dropdowns of the file’s own channel names, so a Z pass or a light group can be read into the picture.
  • Four OCIO effects under Effects ▸ Colour: OCIO colour space transform, OCIO display transform, OCIO look transform, and OCIO file transform. The config ones list the project’s config, the file one reads .cube, .spi1d, .spi3d, .clf, .ctf, and ASC CDL files on its own.
  • Project settings ▸ Working space lets a project composite in its config’s colourspace instead of linear Rec. 709.
  • Keyframe speed by value. Right-click a key in the graph for Keyframe speed, the same window as Animation ▸ Keyframe speed, with speed and influence for each side and a Continuous tick. Clicking the readout pill on a selected key opens the same fields as a popover (requested by @billy17).
  • The Easing panel fills its width, labels its four handle numbers and shows the selected key’s speed and influence under the box.
  • Middle-mouse panning in the Timeline and the Viewer. The Timeline pans both ways at once, the Viewer only pans the picture (requested by @yawn3k).
  • Angle parameters display in graph view like any other value, and dragging a rotation past 360 or 0 now increments the full turn.
  • A release can carry a warning that Lumit shows after the update is downloaded and before deciding to restart, for anything a project may depend on.
  • Spanish and Polish are on the translation page.

Before you update

  • Accumulation Motion Blur (Formerly Motion Blur), now applies blur to the image of a footage layer, as well as it’s transformations, effects, etc.

Downloads

Windows, macOS (Apple silicon) and Linux builds of v0.3.2 are on the GitHub release.

A small follow-up to 0.3.0. Mainly just some small fixes to crashes and issues launching the program. Also fixes updating from inside Lumit not working, so you will have to install this version manually again (sorry), but all future versions with any luck can be updated from within the application.

Fixed

  • Updating from inside Lumit downloaded the update, offered a restart, and then did nothing, this was found on windows, macOS and Linux are still.
  • Lumit crashed when a value was dragged while the timeline was playing, and when a clip carrying retime was scaled.
  • A panel whose contents could not be drawn showed a blank grey rectangle. It now displays the fault and writes it to the diagnostics file.
  • Opening a project while one was already open left panels reading the closed project.
  • A start-up that failed before the window appeared left Lumit running while displaying nothing. It now opens a window explaining the error.
  • The start-up scan opened console windows when finding plugins.
  • OFX plugins that set their own controls while loading refused to apply.
  • An OFX suite installed in a folder of its own was not found.
  • Linux and macOS ran Flutter’s Impeller renderer rather than Skia.
  • On Linux the window asked to be maximised before it existed.
  • In the Graph editor’s speed view, a dragged keyframe ran ahead of the pointer and jumped back to the pointer when it was released.

What is new

  • Settings ▸ Performance ▸ Full resolution while dragging renders a value drag at the Viewer’s own resolution rather than the reduced one. Off by default.

Downloads

Windows, macOS (Apple silicon) and Linux builds of v0.3.1 are on the GitHub release.

The largest release Lumit has had by far, with a complete overhaul to the design, along with many smaller changes and additional features. The introduction of the node system in Lumit, along with the beginnings of the audio workspace. Tracking, Roto, and Puppet tools are all included in this release as well. Lumit now also supports OFX, CLAP and VST3 instruments. After Effects projects that you can directly port, with builtin and some 3rd party effects transferring across too.

This is still a beta. With a large update comes a large number of bugs and issues, please test and report any issues so that we can clean them all up before the next release.

What is new

The new UI

  • With this update every panel has been rebuilt: Timeline, Viewer, Project, Effect controls, Settings, Welcome screen, Export, etc.
  • Despite this, Lumit is still largely customisable, with themes still altering colors application-wide, and Sharp/Round options, as well as a basic density toggle. You can also adjust if text is displayed, or icons, across many parts of the ui.
  • The webpage for Lumit has recieved an overhaul too ^_^
  • If you find any issues with the look or improvements, feedback is welcome, and we want to make this as accessible to as many users as possible.

The Timeline

  • Two views: Layers for bars and summary keys, Graph for the curves and customising keyframes.
  • The addition of a navigator above the timeline ruler, which indicates the playhead position, as well as the region of the composition you’re zoomed in on
  • Keyframe shapes in the layer view are altered by their interpolation, which can be different on each half of the keyframe.
  • Marquee selection, add items to a selection with shift, and clicking a property’s name selects all its keys. Drag the edge of the marquee to strech out all the keyframes that are selected within it.
  • Certain columns of the outline area can be adjusted to hide items you may not need. For instance you can alter the width of the switches, modes, and hide the parent column.

The node graph

  • An alternative way to composite. It works seamlessly with the effect controls stack. With this you can wire effects into each other, and create inputs driven by layers or randomness. The node workspace is built with nodes being the centre of your workflow.
  • Wire types have colours, to indicate what can be wired.
  • The introduction of a point stream, which outputs a list of positions which can be used to drive behaviour.
  • Custom shader: write WGSL and it acts as a regular effect. To access double click it.
  • The viewer can now also display what an effect does to a layer with a new “at effect” preview that appears when selecting a node or an effect.

The Audio workspace

Still a lot of work required to make Lumit capable of doing audio work properly. But these are some of the parts that have been included in this release.

  • A Mixer with a strip per row with sound in the composition, and a master fader ahead of a limiter.
  • Pan, as a constant-power balance.
  • Fades are keyframe pairs, if you have issues with these, they are likely going to be changed in the next release.
  • Beat detection writes markers and numbers bars from a grid the project keeps.
  • A spectral lane per layer, drawn from a tiled spectrogram, beside the waveform lane.
  • Lower behind ducks one layer under another, wired through a Volume socket on the Layer out box.
  • Detach audio copies a layer’s sound onto a sibling.
  • Audio-only export is possible.

Plugins

  • Lumit is an OFX host. Plugins installed are found at start-up and sit beside the built-in effects, grouped, searchable, and starrable like any other.
  • CLAP and VST3 instruments and effects host as inserts in a layer’s own audio chain.
  • After Effects effect import OFX plugins when they are installed and availalbe in Lumit, if not, if Lumit has it’s own version of the effect it transfers to that instead for specific effects.

After Effects projects

  • Lumit imports .aep files directly, under File ▸ Import ▸ After Effects project.
  • Keyframes carry across value for value, along with eases. Masks, mattes, parenting, markers, and blend modes are also imported.
  • There may still be some bugs when importing projects from AE, so please report those. Additionally, there is currently not support for transferring expressions to Lumit.

Tracking

  • Camera track solves a shot: pose per frame, focal per segment, a point cloud you can select from, and a Camera layer linked to the solve.
  • Planar track solves for a surface, and can add the track to a corner pin effect, or follow one or two points, and Create transform keys bakes it onto a layer’s Position, Rotation and Scale - added to what is already there.

Roto brush and Puppet

  • Roto brush: scribble on a frame, and the matte propagates through the shot on the in-tree optical flow, if it is incorrect, you can update as you go.
  • Puppet: pins on a conforming mesh, four tools available for it in the Viewer.

Paint, shapes and text

  • Paint strokes land on any layer that draws, and if using a tablet, adjust width based on pressure.
  • Shape modifiers: Trim paths, Repeater, Offset path, dashes, gradient fill, and a boolean combine of two shapes.
  • A shape’s path can be morphed by keying the path.
  • Text animators: one selector, two shapes and five property groups. Text can also be placed on a mask path, and convert into shapes or points.

Particles and the points family

  • Particulate is the first particle tool in Lumit. Emit particles from a point or shape and set how they move and evolve over their lifespan. Particles live in 3D space and moving the composition’s camera adjusts the view of them.
  • A points stream is carried on a wire, and six effects produce or consume one: Grid, Scatter, Emit from image, Clone to points, Trail and Connect points.

Effects

  • Now with over one hundred built in effects, Generate and Transition categories are new.
  • Every effect can be driven by a matte, through one row that picks its channel, and a Mix row that picks its blend. These aim to adjust the strength of an effect per pixel, but for more infomation visit the effect docs.
  • Curves and levels now have an interactive curve and histogram respectively.
  • Expression controls - slider, angle, checkbox, colour and point added to help control expressions or other effects.
  • Drivers, are controls used specifically for driving values in the node graph, with several options built in currently, with an expression driver planned.
  • The physical lens flare gained spectral ghosts, Fresnel edges, a field-dependent starburst and per-element coatings.
  • Every distance and every point is measured in pixels at composition size. No effect uses percentages of the composition width anymore.

Colour, export and media

  • Five built-in colour spaces, and a resize that picks a filter.
  • The export dialogue is one page with a table of contents. If the format you’re exporting doesn’t support a section it appears disabled.
  • Proxies are a second media reference which you can generate from any layer. It displays in the project panel if a proxy is in use, and exporting will by default re-render with the actual layers.
  • A folder of numbered stills imports as one footage item.

Smaller things

  • Guide layers: a per-layer switch.
  • Layer groups: groups layers within a composition without precomping them.
  • An Easing panel of curve tiles that apply on click.
  • Rulers and guides on the panel, with the magnet.
  • Snapshots photograph the visible region at the resolution it is drawn at.
  • A workspace can be saved.
  • Effect console can be accessed with Ctrl+Space.
  • Every Project row carries a hue square that sets its label, and a folder’s colour tints what it holds.
  • A composition remembers where you were, and a precomp opens on the frame it is showing.
  • Translation has moved off Crowdin and onto the site.

Performance

  • The Timeline builds only the rows in view and reuses them across a scroll.
  • A drag asks the engine nothing about a document it is not changing, and an edit’s work is one wave rather than a call per item.
  • Each effect’s output is kept, so editing the last effect in a stack re-composites only that one. A precomp’s frames cache as one unit, and layers under a full-frame opaque layer are not rendered at all.
  • The idle cache fill wraps the work area and keeps going into RAM.
  • A lost graphics device is rebuilt.

Known gaps

  • Colour management is half built: the OCIO implementation is in, the surfaces around it are not finished.
  • Custom shader nodes - the graph inside a shader - are still to come; the shader effect itself is here.
  • Lights and camera depth of field are not built. Layers are planes in space.
  • Roto brush propagation is well over its frame budget on the classical path, so long shots are slow.

Fixed

  • The razor cuts through an eased speed ramp without moving the keys either side.
  • Changing a composition’s frame rate leaves the playhead where it was in time.
  • An animated aperture no longer stops the lens flare’s frames from caching.
  • A beat source picked by name is always heard, whatever the comp mix is doing.
  • A layer added into a composition that has a solo up is born soloed.
  • Tile’s output window is centred on the tile centre.
  • A click on a row that is already the lone selection is not a second command.
  • A project saved under a bare name gets .lum.

I’m sure there’s a lot more to all these sections, but considering how large an update it’s been these are some of the main items. With this, going forward releases should be smaller again, and with some many new people looking to try it, we’ll aim to make sure it doesn’t impact any work you begin in Lumit now!

Two hundred and twenty-two commits since 0.1.0, a of which are minor changes and hopefully improvements. As well as expressions implemented largely by Airyz as a way to drive properties. There is also the new Lens Flare plugin, Flow re-implemented (with improved motion vectors still needing to be implemented). On all platforms you can now update the application through the app, removing any need to download and setup the application on each update, and linux builds now come in a flatpak, and macOS has signed .dmg’s

What is new

Expressions

  • A numeric property can be driven by a script instead of keyframes — Rhai, with time, the composition around it, and the document to read from. Point and colour properties cannot be driven yet.
  • Text layers take their words from an expression, so counters and readouts update as the playhead moves.
  • The editor autocompletes function names, and the graph editor draws the curve an expression is producing across the visible range.

Lens flare

  • A new flare effect that traces ghosts through a lens rather than stamping sprites: calibrated optics, focus distance, closed-loop exposure and a Fourier starburst.
  • A library of over a thousand real lenses, searchable, plus .lens files so a flare you have set up can be sent to somebody else.
  • Light sources can take their colour from the picture underneath, and the whole effect is bounded so it cannot run away with a frame’s budget.

Lens flares currently work’s as up to 8 point sources, there are plans to support area’s as a lens source but this is a current limitation

Installing and updating

  • macOS gets a signed disc image and Linux a Flatpak.
  • Check for updates is in the windows menu, and an update arrives. On Windows, Lumit installs per user and replaces itself in place.

Timeline and Viewer

  • Markers are draggable flags; By default shift and a digit places a numbered one.
  • Snapping/Magnet properly working for all items in timeline, and holding Ctrl ignores snapping.
  • Zoom holds the playhead as it moves, and has been updated as a slider rather than +/- buttons to press.
  • Audio waveforms retain resolution when zoomed, can stack by frequency band, and can switch between sitting in the middle of a row or the bottom. The last two are options that can be changed in settings.
  • Locking a layer now prevents any action that would change the render.
  • Time readouts no longer offset other items next to them and can be typed into.
  • Shape paths are editable in the viewer.
  • Anti-aliasing is a project property, with up to eight samples. The project default can be adjusted in settings.
  • Viewer now doesn’t have interpolation on by default, but this can be re-enabled in settings.
  • Project settings now have their own menu separate from the normal settings window.
  • Effects can be reordered by dragging in the Effects panel.
  • Menus navigate by hover: crossing a heading hands over to it, and resting on a row flies its submenu out.

Themes, shortcuts and the clipboard

  • Themes can be imported/exported as a .lumtheme file. Themes from a newer build are back compatible and simply ignore unused keys.
  • Layers and effects copy and paste, including to and from the system clipboard. This can be done from both the timeline, or in the effect controls.

Language framework

  • Every word now comes from one British-English file, and translations can be worked on from there. Labels, effect/parameter names, shortcut descriptions — are looked up based on their English text.
  • Settings > Interface > Language picks a language and defaults to your machine. Nothing is translated yet: German, Ukrainian, Kazakh and Simplified/Traditional Chinese are open for translation and their files are currently empty, so every word falls back to English. Help is welcome!

Knowing where the time goes

  • Per-layer and per-effect render times in the Timeline and effect control panel, with a switch that removes the column when you turn measuring off.
  • Memory report can be found in the performance settings in debug mode, counting what the graphics driver is holding vs. what Lumit holds.
  • A progress bar now appears when rendering a frame to preview.

Fixed

  • The disk cache could queue writes without limit on an idle Mac, which is now resolved.
  • A LUT never checked it’s domain, and a LUT file changing on disk did not invalidate its cache in the project. Both now resolved.
  • A precomposition used as a matte now gates correctly, and the layer under it keeps its effects’ pixels.
  • Channel view could break the viewer. Now only affects preview as intended.
  • Dragging a keyframe in a lane moved it one frame and stopped.
  • The Viewer re-created its render target every frame instead of keeping one per size.
  • A frame now hands the driver one command buffer rather than one per layer.

Lumit’s first release. It is a native motion-graphics and compositing editor — Built with Rust, with Flutter for the frontend — built with Windows, macOS, and Linux. This release provides the foundations and really is just a test of our release system. Built already; compositions, layers, keyframes, playback, and tools to start making something move.

What is new

(Literally everything, also if you’re reading the first release notes in the future, Hi <^_^> )

  • Compositions with layers, keyframes and nesting — precompose a selection with Ctrl+Shift+C, and nested compositions composite with proper transparency.
  • Shape layers and paint, with a toolbar carrying the shape, paint and camera tools.
  • Vegas-style retiming and a sequence view for arranging clips in order.
  • Layer ends are draggable handles, limited by the source footage, and keyframes report their true positions on the timeline.
  • Three-tier frame cache — GPU, RAM and disk, with frames written to disk while the editor is idle.
  • A colour dropper that reads the value under any pixel, from whatever layer the property asks for, and a picker that applies its colour live as you drag.
  • A full menu bar with nine menus; on macOS it is the system menu bar.
  • Composition tabs reorder by dragging, timeline drops land where they are aimed, and the zoom buttons hold the middle of the view in place.
  • Missing footage is displayed as such in the comp and project panel, and file paths stay private to your machine.
  • The first slice of keyboard shortcuts, with property disclosure showing what each key reveals.

Fixed

  • It can only go downhill from here.
