v0.10.1
The Cut timeline has been reworked, with speed curves on clips, envelopes, takes, and a Pan/Crop window. Sprite flare is now designed in its own Flare window, Lumit’s look can be changed with your own styles, written like CSS, and Andrea has added new drivers, Type fill, and 18 new effects. Along with this there are plenty of smaller changes and updates.
What is new
Cut
- Each picture clip carries its speed as a line across it, with six curves, Flip and Thin. Double-click resets it, Ctrl fine tunes it, and a ramp can be copied onto other clips.
- Clips have fx and Pan/Crop buttons, a gain line, an opacity line along the top, and takes, with T and Shift+T to step through them.
- Tracks have volume and pan envelopes, and Vol, Pan, and Level sliders in their headers. They take the layer’s label colour, which a clip can override.
- Regions, time range drags, overwrite and trim crossfades with Auto crossfade, and Paste attributes.
- Clips show stereo waveforms that fill them, and frames along them.
- Comps can be dropped onto the Cut timeline.
- Delete only ever takes clips, never a whole track.
- A new Crop effect.
Sprite flare
- Sprite flare is now built from elements, added, ordered, and edited in its own Flare window, with a live preview and the Viewer following along.
- There are 11 kinds of element, from glows and rays to ghosts, orbs, and dirt, and 50 built-in flares in six groups. Your own flares can be saved, imported and exported as .flare files, or copied as text.
- The light can come from a point, a point in 3D, the comp’s lights, bright spots in the picture, the points of a mask, or a points stream. It can hide behind a layer or a depth, fade at the frame’s edge, flicker, and take motion blur.
Styles and themes
- Your own styles are small files written like CSS. Each starts from Studio, Desk, or Lantern and changes corners, gaps, fonts, fills, edges, and shadows, for every panel or just one. They show in the Shape dropdown, and saving the file redraws Lumit straight away.
- Colour schemes are written the same way, and can also set the Viewer surround, the socket colours, and the label colours. Old theme files still open.
- Styles can frost whatever is behind a pane, menu, or dialog, put a picture under the whole window, and bring their own icons. Reduce transparency in Settings draws it all solid.
- Your own icons now replace every icon, where before they reached about half.
- The manual has a new Make tab, on making extensions, themes, icons, LFX effects, OFX plugins, scripts, and using MCP.
Drivers and new effects
- Stagger, Random, Oscillator, Value noise, and Ring wave drivers, give each copy Clone to points stamps its own value (thanks to @andrea68git).
- Clone to points stamps each have their own Scale, Rotation, and Opacity, and Label points can decode, scramble, and turn its labels.
- Type fill fills the frame with rows of words that stretch to fill the room a shape leaves them.
- 18 new effects, among them Voronoi, Halftone, Gradient map, Conical gradient, Four-point warp, and Bilateral blur, and Glass.
- Copied effects paste along with the drivers and wires that feed them.
- LFX effects can work over the comp below them, and grey out rows that would do nothing.
Effects
- Shake has a Style row (Normal, Twitchy, and Jumpy), Phase, a Wave twirl for each axis, Scale, and Y edges.
- Glow has a Rolloff control, which bends a strong glow smoothly towards white instead of clipping it.
- Particulate’s flock streams along in groups, where before it knotted up or blew apart.
- OFX plugins that support CUDA, OpenCL, or Metal render on the graphics card, and extensions can carry OFX plugins.
- Scripts can see and set an effect’s own rows, and
lumit-clireads installed extensions before a script runs.
Shape layers and masks
- The Pen can leave a path open. Click the first point to close it, or press Enter or Esc, click outside the Viewer, or pick another tool to leave it open.
- Layer ▸ Mask and shape path ▸ Closed opens or closes a path afterwards.
- Deleting points keeps a path until its last point is gone.
Smaller things
- The Viewer can play at half or quarter speed, with the sound slowed and its pitch kept.
- Largest picture in Settings ▸ Preview and cache sets how big a picture this computer will draw, and the Viewer says when a frame is cut to it.
- Right-clicking a layer has the Effect menu, and a newly added effect is picked, so its points are ready to drag.
- New solid asks for its name, size, and colour first.
- In the Easing panel, Shift-click eases into the later key only, and Ctrl-click eases out of the earlier key only.
- Several files dropped from the Project panel go end to end in order, in the Timeline and in Cut. Holding Shift stacks them as before. The Project panel has a Date column.
- Ticking an audio stream sets it on every picked layer.
- A right-button drag across wires on the node canvases ties them together.
- Menus open above their control when there’s no room below, and the arrow keys and Enter walk any menu.
- Every animation follows the motion setting, and the system’s reduce motion setting takes Lumit to Minimal.
- Brazilian Portuguese has 114 more strings (thanks to @CarlosDS6).
Performance
- Playing a comp does much less work each frame. Only the clock and what’s drawn at the playhead follow the frame, and hidden tabs stay quiet.
- Trails in Sprite mode keep their pictures, so playing deep into a comp no longer slows down. At frame 240 a frame went from 218 ms to about 11 ms.
- Dragging shows the frames that finish, where before it showed none. The frame after dragging a Lens flare went from 6.4 s to 0.62 s on a slow card.
- Lens flares draw at Draft while dragging, about 6 times faster.
Fixed
- Linear wipe only worked on a layer the size of a 1080p frame.
- Radial wipe, Lens distort, Mirror, and Radio waves started at 960, 540 whatever the comp’s size.
- Point rows such as Lens flare’s Light ran off the edge of the Effect controls panel.
- Rounded boxes with an outline covered it at their corners.
- Long names and big numbers broke a few screens, such as 23.976 cut to “23.” in the fps column.
- Dialogs could crash in a window smaller than they are, and a click beside a filled-in window could close it.
- Shortcut rows vanished from Settings when their key was taken.
- A clip whose speed went below 0% froze on one frame in the picture.
- On Linux, Lumit could hang at start with web fonts installed, and crash on close with an NVIDIA card.
- On Linux, every graphics card was held to 16-bit colour and 4x anti-aliasing.
Before you update
- Open shape paths are filled now.
- An open mask no longer hides its layer.
- A closed path of two points now fills, and as a mask cuts its shape. Before, it drew nothing, and as a mask it hid its layer.
- A Linear wipe saved with its centre away from the middle of its layer looks different. It now sweeps from the layer’s middle.
- Particulate flocks move differently. Separation no longer throws particles apart, and steering turns particles without slowing them down.
- Sprite flares made before this version have slightly different ghosts. The glow and the streak are unchanged.
- Label points labels sit where their points are, between pixels, instead of snapping to the nearest whole pixel, so they can look slightly softer.
- OFX plugins now render on the graphics card where they support it, which can change a frame very slightly. Render plugins on the graphics card in Settings turns it off.
Known gaps
- OFX plugins on the graphics card still pass frames through ordinary memory, so they aren’t faster yet.
- Shake doesn’t have a Channels group or Crop input yet.
- The Pen can’t carry on an open path from its end point yet.
- The shader graph doesn’t have wire ties yet.
- Corner pin and other warps still stay inside the picture they’re handed in a node graph.
- Arabic still reads left to right.
Thanks very much to everyone who sent in reports and requests for this release, and to andrea and carlos for their work on it. I hope you enjoy using it.
