Lumit v0.10.2

Smoother motion blur, effects at 8 and 32 bits, an AppImage for Linux, and fixes for the Viewer, 3D orbit, and image sequences.

All releases
v0.10.2

Motion blur on fast layers now smears instead of stepping, effects work again in 8 and 32-bit projects, and Linux has an AppImage.

A few of these change how an existing project can look, so make sure to check the Before you update section.

What is new

  • Linux has an .AppImage beside the Flatpak, which runs without installing anything.
  • Wave warp and Ripple have a Wave speed, so they move on their own without keyframes. After Effects imports bring Wave Speed across onto it.
  • A fast layer with motion blur is drawn with more copies the faster it moves, up to a limit set beside Samples in Composition settings.
  • With the Pen, clicking either end of an open path carries it on, and clicking its other end closes it.
  • Reload footage in the Project panel menu reads a file or image sequence again.
  • Settings ▸ Viewer ▸ Orbit can invert the orbit left and right, and up and down.

Performance

  • OFX plugins pass frames through much faster. At 1080p about 185 ms of every frame is now about 30.
  • Roto brush propagation takes about 40% less time, with the same mattes as before.

Fixed

  • Most effects came out empty in a project set to 8 or 32 bits.
  • The Viewer could show scrambled blocks on machines with two graphics cards, and on some older AMD cards.
  • Orbiting in the Viewer or a 3D view kept turning after the mouse stopped, with every tool but the Unified camera.
  • Replacing an image sequence that was still being exported kept its layer at the old length until Lumit was restarted.
  • Fast layers with motion blur came out as separate copies instead of a smear. A child didn’t blur with its parent, a 3D layer didn’t blur when the camera moved, and layers inside a collapsed precomp didn’t blur at all.
  • Depth of field pro left a fine grain over a wide blur.
  • Scaling a layer in the Viewer after moving its anchor point could stretch it sideways, or jump it to thousands of percent.
  • Measure read footage and Sequence layers at the comp’s size, and measured 3D layers lying flat.
  • A second view of a comp, such as a Top view beside the camera view, didn’t follow the playhead.
  • On Linux, an extension’s page turned into a still picture whenever a menu or tooltip was over it.

Before you update

  • A project set to 8 or 32 bits draws its effects, where most of them used to come out empty.
  • Depth of field pro no longer leaves a fine grain over a wide blur, by either method.
  • Fast layers with motion blur are drawn with more copies, up to 128, so they smear instead of stepping. A child now blurs with its parent, a 3D layer blurs when the camera moves, and the layers inside a collapsed precomp blur. Exports of those can look smoother and take longer. Set the second number beside Samples in Composition settings to the first to keep a fixed count.
  • Measure reads footage at its own size, and a Sequence layer at the size of the clip showing, where it used to read the comp’s size. An expression’s sourceRectAtTime changes the same way, so anything wired to either can change size.
  • Measure in Comp space sees a 3D layer through the camera, where it used to measure it lying flat.

Thanks very much to everyone who sent in reports for this release. I hope you enjoy using it.
