Lumit

Release

Lumit v0.7.0

Lumit Pro, Cut workspace, JavaScript expressions and improved presets, points effects, extensions, Illustrator import, and a long list of fixes.

All releases
v0.7.0

This is the biggest release so far. Lumit Pro is here, an optional subscription that helps support Lumit and pays for the servers used to enable the functionality behind sharing, sync, previews, and backup. Lumit itself is still free and open source, and no editing tool will ever be put behind a paywall.

Along with this there is a Cut workspace for arranging large amounts of footage, JavaScript expressions and improved presets, an expanded family of points effects, extensions, layered Illustrator import, and a long list of fixes.

Lumit also has nightly builds now. Turn them on in Settings and Lumit updates to each night’s build, so you get new work before it reaches a release. They haven’t had a release’s testing, so expect the odd problem.

As always please test these new features out and report anything that goes wrong.

What is new

Lumit Pro

  • Lumit Pro is $6 a month or $60 a year, and is bought inside Lumit, from your profile in the bottom left. Everything Lumit could do before is still free, and all offline functionality added in the future will remain that way.
  • Shared projects through Lumit’s relay. Guests join with the link and no setup. Only the host needs Pro.
  • Keep online holds a shared project on Lumit’s server, so nobody’s computer has to stay on. It is encrypted, and the server never reads it.
  • A project kept online also has a second invite that can only look, provide notes on the work, and a hold on a control while someone is changing it. People are shown by name in the main window, and pressing one follows them to see their current work.
  • Composition ▸ Share a preview… sends an export of a comp as a link. Anyone with the link can comment on a frame without an account, and the comments come back into Lumit. A comment added to the Timeline becomes a marker on its layer.
  • A new version of a preview goes to the same link with a line saying what changed, and reviewers can approve a version.
  • Backup keeps a copy of a project each time it’s saved, with its picture and what changed. File ▸ Project history… opens a save as a copy or puts it back, and one comp can be brought back from an earlier save.
  • Settings sync carries shortcuts, themes, workspaces, and presets to every device you sign in on.
  • An account holds up to 50 GB.

Profiles and accounts

  • Profiles sit on the bottom strip, each with its own unique settings. They’re free and don’t need an account.
  • Sign in with an email and password, Google, or Discord. Settings ▸ Account has all of it in one place.

The Cut workspace

Cut is brand new, and very much work in progress. There’s a lot of work required on it, but we’re sharing the beginnings of it now.

  • Cut is a seventh workspace, aimed at being a NLE within Lumit. The goal being you can do your entire workflow without having to leave the program.
  • The Cut timeline shows each layer as a track of clips, with Select, Razor, Ripple, Roll, Slip, and Slide tools on V, C, B, N, Y, and U. Holding a key uses that tool for one drag/click.
  • The source view plays a footage item, marks In and Out, and Inserts or Overwrites the marked part at the playhead.
  • A picture clip and its sound clip can be linked, so they move, trim, and cut together.
  • Ripple delete, close gap, lift, extract, match frame, trims and rolls to the playhead, and nudges. Each is one undo step.
  • Two picture clips that overlap dissolve, and a clip’s fades work on picture as well as sound.
  • A clip can play a comp, and a clip can be turned into a comp.
  • The first time startup screen also adds Premiere Pro/Resolve as an option, which makes footage arrive on Sequence layers and opens Lumit in Cut.
  • Make proxy on several footage items queues them one after another, and a folder’s menu has Make proxies.
  • The project panel has a Duration column, and a setting for thumbnails on footage rows.

Shared projects

  • An invite is now one lumitlab.com/join link that holds every address the host can be reached at. It’s hidden in the Shared project window until you ask to see it.
  • The host can set a password that guests type as well as having the link.
  • Lumit asks the router to open the port, so people outside your network can join without a VPN. The port is closed again when sharing stops.
  • lumit-relay is a small server anyone can run for when neither router lets the other in.
  • Footage is sent to people who haven’t got it, as a compressed stand-in with sound. An export can fetch the frames it reads at full quality, fetch the originals, or be done on the computer that has them.
  • What someone else has selected is marked in their colour, in the Timeline, the effect controls, the project panel, and the node graph.
  • Removing a guest replaces the invite, so they can’t rejoin with the old one.
  • Upload and download limits for footage are in the Shared project window and in Settings.
  • Everyone in a shared project needs to be on the same version to access. If you run your own relay, it needs updating too.

Expressions and After Effects

  • Expressions can be written in JavaScript as well as Rhai, with additional functions, such as wiggle, loopOut, linear, ease, and effect(“x”)(“y”). Each expression keeps its own language, and both are syntax highlighted.
  • An .ffx preset can be applied to a layer. A pseudo effect arrives as the new Custom controls effect.
  • Expressions in an After Effects project come across as JavaScript, and a property with keyframes and an expression keeps its keyframes.
  • A text layer imported from After Effects keeps its font, spacing, scale, caps, outline, alignment, and box width, and lands where it was drawn.
  • Alt+K adds or removes a keyframe at the playhead. Alt+Shift+P, S, R, T, and A do it for Position, Scale, Rotation, Opacity, and Anchor point.
  • Shift+= and Shift+- step the blend mode, and a lot more After Effects shortcuts are on their default keys.
  • The Expressions panel has Import and Export, so saved expressions can be shared as a file.

Effects

  • A family of points effects. Vary, Pick, Transform, Merge, Relax, and Flow points change a stream of points and hand it on.
  • Points along path, Text to points, Track points, and Label points make or label points from a mask, a Text layer, or footage. Points field draws a stream as a picture, and Bake points lets a driver read one.
  • Scatter and Emit from image now feed the effects below them. Adding a points effect under one that makes points wires them together.
  • Points can carry named values, which can be a number, an offset, or a colour.
  • Gaussian blur, Directional blur, and Glow have Repeat edge pixels. With it off the layer grows to hold the effect, so a blur on a shape or text layer isn’t cut off at the edge of the art.
  • Drop shadow can fall outside the layer, and so can the Drop shadow, Outer glow, and Stroke layer styles.
  • Shape gradients have an opacity at each end, and a Gradient stops row for adding colours between them. Every stop can be keyframed.
  • A selected effect’s points are marked in the Viewer, and a point can be picked outside the frame.

Extensions

  • An extension is a panel someone else has made. It’s a folder with a web page in it, shown in its own panel and listed under Window ▸ Extensions.
  • One is installed from a folder in Settings, after a window listing what it asks to be allowed.

Importing and projects

  • An Illustrator file with two or more layers imports as a comp, with a layer for each Illustrator layer.
  • PSD import now reads nested groups, 16 bit, solid colour fills, Fill, vector masks, and six layer styles. Twelve kinds of adjustment layer come in as an Adjustment layer with the nearest effect, switched off.
  • A file with several audio streams, such as a recording with the game and the mic apart, can have its streams picked, split onto a layer each, and merged back. Layer ▸ Audio has Split and Merge.
  • Imports, opening a project, and After Effects import run in the background, with a card showing the percentage and a Cancel button.
  • A packed project also carries proxies, the OCIO config, and the files effects read, such as a LUT.
  • A project someone sends you opens with Pack automatically off, even if they had it on.
  • Opening a project after a crash asks whether to restore the edits it left behind.
  • Opening a project that’s already open brings that window forward.
  • Right-clicking a footage item has Show in folder.

Text

  • Dragging with the Type tool draws a box, and the text wraps to its width. The Paragraph panel has the box width and Justify.
  • New text starts with kerning on.

The Timeline

  • Markers can have a colour and a duration. A marker with a duration is a region, shaded down through the lanes.
  • Holding Shift while scrubbing snaps the playhead to markers, layer ends, keyframes, and the work area.
  • J, K, and L shuttle. Each further press of J or L doubles the speed, up to 8 times.
  • Parenting a layer keeps it where it was, as does unparenting and swapping parents.
  • The parent and matte pickers show the layer’s number before its name.
  • Dragging a handle in the graph editor moves the same handle on every selected keyframe.
  • Dragging inside a key block’s box moves every keyframe together.
  • Each comp remembers how far down it’s scrolled if you switch comps and then go back.
  • Right-clicking under the layer rows opens a menu, and the layer menu has Precompose.
  • The Layer menu has Lock, Unlock all layers, and Arrange.

Node graphs

  • A wire going backwards is two curves that meet in the middle, so it no longer swings out past its sockets.
  • A new Transform starts with Scale x and y linked, and the Node panel and the boxes have the link too.
  • Remove background, Depth, and the Roto brush work inside a node graph.

Interface

  • Menus, dropdowns, and dialogues show their surface first with the rows following a beat behind, in Studio and Lantern.
  • A panel on its own can be dragged and closed by its title, so the Viewer can be moved.
  • Lumit can show in your Discord status. Settings ▸ General ▸ Discord status picks between off, Lumit only, and the project and composition names.
  • Settings has a Hardware video decoding tick, on by default.
  • The system’s reduce motion setting turns Lumit’s animations off.

macOS

  • Clicking an invite link or double-clicking a .lum opens it in Lumit.

Smaller things

  • Italian has its first 52 strings (thanks to @andrea68git).
  • The website has new sections, a Projects page with six projects to download, a media page, both accessed via the footer, and a Lumit Pro page.
  • The manual has been restyled to match the website, and lists every page on its home page.
  • If you like noodle wires, catenary curves have been added for node connections, courtesy of @Airyzz.

Fixed

  • A crash after a project’s first save lost everything since that save.
  • A failed export deleted the file it was replacing.
  • Changing a layer’s volume or audio switch during playback wasn’t heard until playback was restarted.
  • The picture was up to 16 frames behind an edit made during playback.
  • 5.1 and 7.1 footage played up to 9.9 dB too loud and clipped.
  • The wave and spectrogram in the Audio timeline stayed at the old zoom until you scrolled, and zooming out could leave part of a clip blank.
  • A project opened in the first few seconds after launch showed its OFX plugins with a raw name and no controls.
  • RSMB and Echo saw no motion from Sequence layers and node graph comps inside a precomp, and did nothing on a Sequence layer.
  • On the frame before a cut, Echo and motion blur plugins read the outgoing shot held.
  • Controls on a node graph box stopped working once the graph was zoomed out or panned.
  • Pressing a marker moved the playhead to it, and a dragged marker snapped to where the playhead used to be.
  • Dragging keyframes selected on the same frame across several rows did nothing.
  • Clicking an effect’s name in the Timeline collapsed its layer.
  • The Timeline’s selection box was drawn behind the bars and row lines.
  • Shutting a heading inside a U reveal brought every other row back.
  • The slider on some effect rows in the Timeline sat behind the buttons beside it.
  • Editing a keyed shape, mask, paint, or puppet value after moving the playhead wrote over the last keyframe.
  • A layer moved by an expression kept its Viewer outline where it started.
  • Picking a point on the Viewer took two undos to put back.
  • Up, Down, Home, and End moved the Type tool’s caret twice, and double-clicking an emoji selected half of it.
  • An expression with a long chain of operators could crash Lumit, and a loop could hang it for minutes.
  • Easing x on a chained Scale in a Transform effect left y behind.
  • Quitting during the tour asked to save the tour’s own comp.
  • The blend and matte pickers were cut down to empty boxes in a narrow effect controls panel.
  • Closing a project cleared the puppet meshes of every other open project.
  • Letting go of Shift early on a Viewer move dropped the layer off its axis.
  • A 1px line sitting on a pixel boundary drew nothing.
  • EXR wasn’t picked from an export’s file name, and a % in a sequence name broke it.
  • The Windows installer could package an old DLL left beside the exe.
  • On macOS the menu bar was rebuilt far more often than it needed to be, and the Illustrator helper had no memory limit.
  • The README’s macOS and Linux build steps installed an FFmpeg version Lumit can’t build with.

Before you update

  • Drop shadow, and the Drop shadow, Outer glow, and Stroke layer styles, are no longer cut off at the layer’s edge. A shape, text, or small solid that has one may look different.
  • A points effect that is last on a shape or text layer now draws past the edge of the art too.
  • Clone to points sorts its stamps by depth. Turn Depth sort off on the effect to get the old order back.
  • A 1px line from a points effect that sat on a pixel boundary drew nothing, and now draws.
  • A layer used as a matte now runs its Node graph effects, so the matte may change.
  • Remove background, Depth, and the Roto brush did nothing inside a node graph. A graph that has one now shows its result.
  • RSMB, Echo, and other effects that read the frames either side now see motion from Sequence layers and node graph comps, and read the right shot on the frame before a cut.
  • A clip’s fades now fade its picture as well as its sound. A video clip that was given a fade in the Audio timeline will fade in the comp too.
  • A clip that plays a comp now draws and sounds, it used to do neither.
  • 5.1 and 7.1 footage is quieter, as it was being folded down to stereo up to 9.9 dB too loud.
  • Rhai expressions can no longer load files or use eval, and a very long loop may now reach the step limit and stop.

Known gaps

  • Asking the router to open the port hasn’t been tried against many routers. The Shared project window says when a router refuses.
  • On Linux an extension’s page is swapped for a still picture while a menu, tooltip, or dialogue is open.
  • PSD adjustment layers come in switched off, since the same numbers give a different picture in linear light.
  • On macOS, double-clicking a .lumfx or .lumtheme still does nothing.
  • Lumit can still freeze when importing media on some AMD integrated graphics (#181). Turning Hardware video decoding off in Settings is something to try.

Thanks very much to everyone who sent in reports, requests, and translations for this release, and to everyone who picks up Lumit Pro. It all goes back into Lumit.
