Release

Lumit v0.8.1

Fixes for plugins, first experience, and general QoL improvements.

All releases
v0.8.1

A small follow-up to 0.8.0. Although there’s still some large features I’m working on, we’ll aim for more of these smaller releases going forward, and I’ve adjusted version control to allow for bug fix releases without pulling in all major changes as well. Mainly fixes to plugins and first time use issues. Also adds OFX transitions and generators, and some other QoL improvements.

Fixed

  • With a lot of OFX plugins installed, Lumit would use a significant amount of storage on your system drive while open, and gave it back on close.
  • Sapphire never showed up in Effects & presets, since it takes longer to load than the scan allowed. Twixtor could go missing along with it, since killing a plugin that didn’t respond (but was) would hold up other effects being loaded.
  • Sometimes Sapphire effects showed “This plugin did not render this frame”.
  • OFX plugins that load a model on their first frame, such as a DLSS plugin, were switched off after 10 seconds. The first frame now gets 2 minutes.
  • A precomp used as a matte, such as a track matte or the Matte row of Depth of field, shrank into the middle of the frame when the Viewer was below 100%. Export was never affected.
  • HEVC exports wouldn’t play in QuickTime, Safari, Photos, or on iPhone.
  • The update check only said “Could not check for updates”. It now gives a slightly more detailed message to help respond.
  • The command palette’s search didn’t have the cursor when it opened, so typing did nothing until you clicked it.
  • Dark words on the default green made Create and the other main buttons look switched off.
  • The empty Viewer offered New project again after you’d already made one, and clicking it did nothing. It now offers Import footage next to Open.
  • Deleting the comp you were looking at put an error in the Viewer.
  • On a slow drive the import bar sat at 100% with Cancel doing nothing.
  • Dropping files into Lumit on Linux brought nothing in.
  • A layer dragged in the Viewer only snapped to the comp’s edges and middle with Snap to grid ticked.
  • Shape layers with a lot of keyed path shapes made every frame slow, so turning off the transparency grid, pressing play, or soloing a layer could take several seconds to show.
  • Switching comps kept showing the last comp until the new one had rendered. The Viewer now shows where you left that comp straight away, or a blank picture if you haven’t opened it yet.
  • Opening a precomp could leave the Timeline’s row lines out of step with the rows until you clicked something.
  • Making several changes in a row meant the Viewer finished drawing each one before it got to the last. A frame that’s already been replaced now stops part way, so the latest change shows sooner.
  • Lumit has had the default memory budget increased from 15% to 30% of the system memory.
  • One view could leave you looking at the source clip with no way back to the comp.
  • Leaving Cut didn’t always take the source side away.
  • Space and the frame keys always moved the comp, even with the source side in front.
  • A parented layer’s outline, handles, and motion path stayed put in the Viewer while the picture followed the parent.
  • A shape with a keyed path was outlined where the path started rather than where it is at the playhead.
  • A track matte ignored its layer’s parents, and slid and shrank with a region of interest set in the Viewer.
  • The Transform effect’s Scale came unlinked when its first keyframe was set in the Timeline, and Combine axes put it back unlinked.

What is new

  • Depth of field pro has a new Method row. Ray traced follows rays back through every surface of the lens to the depth, so it shows the lens’s own softness wide open and in the corners. Pointed at a precomp with 3D layers, it traces up to 12 of the layers themselves.
  • In and Out marks set on footage are kept on the item and saved with the project. Dropping the item into a comp or the Cut timeline brings only the marked stretch.
  • File ▸ Import folder brings in the footage in a folder and every folder inside it, and keeps them as folders in the project. Dropping a folder on Lumit does the same.
  • OFX transitions and generators show up in Effects & presets under their own headings. A transition reveals whatever is under the layer, like Lumit’s own wipes, and a generator replaces the layer’s picture.
  • Sign in with Apple added in the sign-in window.
  • Settings ▸ Account ▸ Devices pairs Lumit for iPhone with your device. Add a phone shows a code to scan, and this computer and each phone can be renamed or removed. This is still under testing with only select people added for testing.

Before you update

  • macOS 12 or newer is now needed.
